Happiness is struggle...
    #3960822 -

Bear with me for a second on this one.

If someone has no struggle for survival, it seems that their happiness ends. Maybe they arent miserable, or unhappy, but I dont think they would be happy. I have a few friends that had silver spoons all their life, shit like 6 mil trust funds and such. It seems like they have caused drama and instilled a struggle in their lives to become happy. When that struggle is over, they move onto a new invention of how to screw their lives up.
It is much like losing your wallet and then finding it, thus an elation ensues over something that was never actually lost, just misplaced, but that elation is still real. Like we have to throw ourselves in the ditches just so we can get back out, dust ourselves off and be right back where we were, but with a new sense of happiness.
Do you think there is a cap/limit/acme of happiness/contentness? and once we reach that, we have to start all over, as if only the overcoming of our self imposed chaos gives us emotional rewards and happiness.
your thoughts on this?

I hear this one in another forum, but it came to mind just as i was headed for the poo-per, so.. (it was promptly(?) said that it was said by a child to a grown up that posted it) "one need no money, your heart is your wallet, and as long as you are happy, you are rich!"

This is a great analogy for a much deeper dynamic at play!

Might help for some people to use it to consider the idea of why we would choose to fall into the darkness of forgetfulness versus the one of our being forced into it without a choice. Like you said, people on easy street do it all the time.

The way I see it real happiness is self sufficient and does not depend on anything. It?s self sufficient and comes from within. If you are really happy, even struggling becomes a happy struggle.

Material wealth cannot guarantee you happiness as eating a meal cannot guarantee to keep your stomach full for the rest of your life.

There is no real limit to happiness. The limit comes when you make it dependent on something else. Material wealth has a limit in its potential and cannot be compared to knowing that real happiness is matter of choice.

Short term happiness is relative, a millionaire who has found that he has lost ?500,000 (but still has another ?500,000 remaining) will be very unhappy. Likewise a family stricken with poverty will be over the moon if they find ?50. The thing is that we get used to our current conditions very easily. If one were to win the lottery, one would be extatic, but one would get used to it in less than a year.
Short term happiness is struggle, and does no lead to contentment.
The thing you have to realise is that happiness exists in the mind, and the mind only, you can be a tramp, be treated like shit, and have a really shitty life, and still be happy. You have to look inside yourself and change the things about you that dont make you happy. I believe in the epicurian view of happiness. The three basic ingredients are, having friends who are warm and caring, being in control of your life, and having time to reflect, to think, to meditate. These three things don't require loads of effort and money, even the second one.

You are referring to a cyclic pattern of behavior in human beings which has it's roots in the constant sense of dissatisfaction that comes as a result of our self-importance. Even when we are happy, we not really happy, because we are still grasping at our self. As a result of that grasping, we are always craving, and we never have a proper perspective on our own life. It's from wrong view and desire that we engage in the harmful actions that destroy our happiness and condemn us to the rollercoaster ride you are describing.

"Because we grasp at our self, we develop attachment for those things that we like and hatred for those things we dislike. It's from attachment and hatred that human beings commit all the harmful actions against themselves and each other." -- Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

"All living beings wish for happiness, but out of ignorance they destroy it like a foe." -- Shantideva

There have been periods in my life when I was unhappy but secure,
there were allso periods where I was happy but on shaky legs.
I am a coward since birth, so even in those unhappy times I was gratefull that I feel secure. Somehow I can deal with anything but fear.
