I found 3 mushies in my yard today.The caps were a red similar to the color of a redwood picnic
table,with reddish stems...no white spots on the cap...no gills,only a spongy yellow.The stem bruised
an INTENSE blue immediately.cap was probably 1-2'' and the stems were short and thick.Sorry,no camera,so
no pix.Thanx in advance.

Yeah, most bluing boletes are poisonous and not at all active.

Peace out,

Definitely a Bolete. The bluing reaction involves an entirely different chemistry than the oxidation of psilocybin/psilocin, and the chemicals involved are harmless. There is a common misconception that "most" or "all" bluing Boletes are poisonous, but this is emphatically NOT the case. Only those with RED pores (B. satanas, luridus, etc.) are toxic. Most of these species also happen to stain blue, but the yellow-pored bluing species (at least in the PNW) are edible & good. I gather large quantities of B. zellerii every year, dry & powder them as a seasoning for soups & gravies, & in 20+ years of consuming them have never once become ill.

>Only those with RED pores
..and redish stems.
What you found is definitely an edible boletus, unless it tastes hot/sour/bitter. Taste a small piece and spit it out therafter. If it tastes "edible", it?s good to use.

I myself have found several variations of bluing bolete's;

normally they will have reddish colored caps, yellow sponge gills, and either a yellow or red stem.
They all seem to stain blue instantly upon handleing.

Also, a couple weeks ago i posted pictures here of a Gilled-bluing bolete.

I wouldnt eat any of them. Dont, eat any bluing boletes.

anyways, i am in the process now of writing up a manifesto concerning all the known blue staining fungii which are Not psychoactive.
All the exceptions to the blue stain rewl.

shroom on,
