ID on shroom and free gormet spores
    #2968669 - 08/05/04 05:37 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Here is the deal.

I'm making a couple of ill boletes spore prints. I don't know what kind of bolete it is, but I will give it away to anyone who is interested.

But this post is about identification.

It has a brown cap, white tubes.
The cap was wide as a mountain dew.
stem was stubby.
Stem is brown with a horizontal grain against off white. It looks like wood.
It is a really nice bolete from a park in Urban Massachusetts. (I found some red cracked boletes a few weeks ago.)
It shows no bruising.
The spore print is pink.
Smells like a mushroom (similar to storebought, but more gamey).

Can I get an ID please?

The first person to PM with a request get's the sporeprint (FREE).
If you want to hook me up with something back, I will not refuse.

I am looking for seeds, cactus cuttings, spore prints {matatepec (sp?), the one Maria Sabina used}.

Pink spore print? Din't know boletes had pink sporeprints, they are usually yellow to olive green.

Well, it's got a pink print. The print itself is on yellow paper.

A pinkish spore print for boletes indicates Tylopilus.

Look closely at the surface of the stem. Does there appear to be a set of small raised ridges in a pattern similar to a net? If so, does the pattern extend more than halfway down the stem?

Try bruising the tubes under the cap. Do they change color, or is there no change or the color merely intensifies?

Are there any purplish tints in the color of the cap?

What kind of trees were they found near? If you don't know the exact kind, even knowing if they were evergreens (pine like trees) or not is useful.

Happy mushrooming!

No pines, it was in a maintained public park amongst grass.

It doesn't bruise under the tubes, it looks wet when it's bruised. The cap is starting to get dry, so it's hard to tell.

The stem looked like the grain in wood, vertical. It was brown as the cap. There is no purple tinting in the cap.

I'll make a guess that you've found Tylopilus tabacinus.

For a good ID on a Tylopilus we really need to see the stem in detail.

Happy mushrooming!
