mac question re: zip files
    #3916629 - 03/14/05 04:20 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I'm using Mac OS 9 and I do have Stuffit Deluxe and the latest expander.

The problem I'm having is when I expand a zipped Mac program the Finder sees it as having no type. I can change this in ResEdit to APPL, then the Finder sees it as an application program. But when I click on it I ALWAYS get an error.

I've tried this on many files, but if the file is a zip the type is somehow lost and the application can't run. Any ideas how to fix this?

Well I seem to have determined the problem. This is what happened.

Some not very smart person decided that they wanted all thier files in ZIP instead of SIT.

They didn't have a ZIP program for mac so...

...they copied the files onto a disk and put them on a PC. Then they zipped the files. Since PCs don't recognize resource forks, they were lost. In other words all othe the programs were corrupted.

The lesson is don't zip a mac program on a pc, it won't work!

Install debian on your mac, add non-free to your sources.list and `apt-get install zip unzip' and you are good to go
