Well, helium is extracted from natural gas, so if the natural gas runs out, so does the helium.
This is the economical way of producing helium, but there are also other more costly ways.

Helium is released by alpha radiation. Alpha radiation is a helium nucleus whithout electrons. Once it picks up electrons it's a helium molucule.
Helium can also be synthesized by bombardment of lithium or boron with high-velocity protons.
Helium is also availible in the earths atmosphere at 1 part in 200,000.

Helium is a very light element (hydrogen is the only one lighter than helium) so most of the helium that existed on Earth to begin with has "evaporated" off into space or has been collected under ground in natural gas supplies (the only real source of helium, right now).

I don't think it will run out in 10 years, but yes helium is a LIMITED resource here on earth (despite being the SECOND MOST COMMON element in the universe).

How about the nitrous supply? I don't care so much about the helium, but what about the nitrous????

Im just kidding.

Well seeing as how nitrogen and oxygen are the first and second most abundant gases in the atmosphere...I think our whippet source is OK for a few more millenia

Off to the moon to get that Helium 3 then.

that's handy for very high yielding nuclear power.

i have no problem with not having a high pitched voice from helium. but if it does run out there will never be another floating balloon again!

They could use hydrogen, which is even more efficient at floating.
The explosion of the Hindenburg wasn't caused by the hydrogen, it was the skin. On later analysis they found out that the skin had the same composition as rocket fuel. When you see the explosion you also see bright yellow flames. Hydrogen burns a faint blue.

Yeah, hydrogen also burns very quickly. If the Hindenburg burned entirely because of the hydrogen, it would have been over in a second or two. And no big bright yellow flames :smirk:
