Mon Mar 7, 9:20 AM ET World - Reuters
VIENNA (Reuters) - U.S. and Austrian lawyers have filed a lawsuit demanding Thailand, U.S. forecasters and the French Accor group answer accusations they failed in a duty to warn populations hit by December's Tsunami disaster, a lawyer said Monday.
The lawsuit was filed Friday at a New York district court on behalf of tsunami victims by lawyers including U.S. attorney Edward Fagan, internationally renowned for 1990s lawsuits against Swiss banks over Holocaust-era accounts. It demanded an account of their actions on Dec. 26.
"We expect a hearing within 30 days," Austrian lawyer Gerhard Podovsovnik told Reuters.
"We don't earn any money on the lawsuit. We want to help people," he said. "We are suing to get information."
The disaster left about 300,000 people dead or missing in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Maldives, Bangladesh and East Africa. Hundreds of thousands lost their homes.
The text of the lawsuit is available on the Web site www.tsunamivictimsgroup.com.
The U.S. and Austrian lawyers filed the lawsuit on behalf of around 60 named plaintiffs from Austria, Germany, France, Netherlands and elsewhere. Podovsovnik said they were also acting on behalf of at least 40 more not named.
The lawsuit suggests the Thai government and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which operates a Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, failed to issue the requisite warnings.

No man, they should sue Allah. Remember that pic a little while ago where some asshat muslims were saying there was a "sign from Allah" in one of the waves from the tsunami? He clearly did it, the muslims even said so!

That's not the point. The point is that the U.S. government is seen as having very deep pockets and that the U.S. is to blame for ALL of the world's ills.

Earthquakes can be spotted rather quickly.... the problem is that tons of factors go into predicting tsunamis... are they suing US scientists for not advancing the technology fast enough? I didn't read the text of the suit, but it seems pretty ridiculous to say that we knew this specific earthquak (not in our tsunami warning area) would cause a tsunami. from looking at earthquake update sites, it seems there are hundreds of >6.0 earthquakes in that area every year...
even if the US scientists knew that this specific earthquake was going to cause an earthquake and told everyone they could find in asia, I doubt India, sri lanka, indonesia, malaysia, or thailand have the communications infrastructure to really notify every last little coastal villiage.

i understand that a tsunami is caused by an underwater earthquake. it is not logical then that some richter scale would pick it up? they have thousands of these devices across the world that pick up on tectonic plate activity. even if they knew about they would say anything because the world is overpopulated as is.

An earthquake does not automatically create a tsunami. Why should the U.S. pay for damages from mother nature in other countries? This is a complete bullshit lawsuit. The lawyers bringing this are scum sucking parasitic low lifes who want to feed off of the misfortune of others by bringing misfortune to those who had nothing to do with the cause (by skimming off a substantial fee).
