How thick should substrate be?

I have made a few trays with rye berries with about 1 inch of substrate, and the fruits are tiny, maybe 5 inches at most and theyre ecuadors. how thick should the substrate be for maximum growth? i was thinking of trying 2 inches next time. thanks for the input

I use BRF and Verm cakes on a verm casing and my ecudors fruit up to a 1 foot. usually like 5-9 incheres tho.
