For people into astronomy
    #3860263 - 03/02/05 10:25 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

check this out....

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=st.../space_burst_dc

its about radio signals they found comming from the center of our galaxy.  since they focused on the part of the sky where the signals were found, theyve had a somewhat consistency in the waves.

they think its a brown dwarf of a "magnetar".  if memory serves me right, a magnetar is a neutron star (a star composed of neutrons with a very STRONG magnetic field and very very high density, but not as big as a normal star).  the difference between a magnetar and an average neutron star is that it has about 100 times stronger of a magnetic field than a neutron star (HOLY SHIT!! ).

a brown dwarf, if i remember right, is what is made when a neutron star "dies", a star with such a low mass that it cant start nuclear fusion (because in order to have fusion you must have a certain amount of gravity pushing down and a certain amoutn of mass pushing out)....

so it might be a brown dwarf of a neutron star that has a fucking rediculously powerful magnetic field (magnetar)

please correct me if im wrong with any of the side info i said, but from my understanding of this this is fucking intense stuff... think about it, the center of the galaxy and might be an object with a fucking extremely extremely extremely powerful magnetic field  :crazy2:

on another side note, if its a brown dwarf (which im pretty sure is a dead neutron star), in this case one from a magnetar, and its indeed in the center of the galaxy, that means its possible our galaxy is on the downfall of the cycle... we just dont see the effects yet because the effects havent reached us (things travel at maximum the speed of light, so when we look at stars in the sky its like looking into the past.  for example, if you look at the sun you see what it looked like about 5 minutes ago.  the center of the galaxy is most likely pretty damn far away in light years.

...sorry, i can be boring and insane at times. :werd:

Not really, I have this anti-gravity device at home. 5 easy payments of 20$, or one hard payment of 100$.

I never did know exactly what a nerd was, but if a bad thing then... I don't think being interested in that kind of stuff is stupid at all, I mean sure we don't know much about the universe but we're learning more all the time, which is important cos it get read of all the crap we've been believing Like caveman and dinosaurs were around at the same time, the world is flat... My god created the world so it belongs to me.... I think you cool for it and if nerd means your cool then OK!!

Geek Allert!!!!!!!

:smirk:    Welcome to the club      :smirk:

Im a huge astronomy fan.

It could also be a new type of star all together. All we have are theories of how stars form and die.

It could have something to do with black holes too. They are strange things that we dont fully understand.

hey thanks folks, ha!  geeky interests unite!

It could be a gigantic black hole, which would be nuts, but dont multiple black holes move about in galaxies freely?  and i do black holes have a magnetic field? im think only bodies of mass can have a magnetic field.  i thought they just had a tremendous gravitational pull... but i could be wrong cus my astronomy knowledge is sketchy since i studied it about a year ago.

its cool to know im not alone in this department.  :headbang:

That hasnt been proven yet. They have almost proven that the center of our galaxy has a black hole.

Anything with a gravitational field(mass) should have a magnetic field too.

Since we cant prove or disprove the black hole.....we have NO idea how they were formed. Some say that large stars could collapse into a small black hole....but it hasnt been proven.

Another "theory" is that black holes are the driving "engines" behind galatic evolution.

We may never truly know what they are.

they've believed that there is a neutron star at the center of every galaxy for awhile.

cool niteowl, thanks for clearing that stuff up. magnetic fields can tear shit apart right? like, theres certain areas around the earth that have too powerful of a magnetic field for space shuttles to go through without harm being done to astronauts (or maybe that was back when we were using rocketships or something). im trying to recollect my astronomy facts... at least most of em, but my college textbook for that class is a very tedious read so I don't have the motivation to read through the whole thing cover to cover while doing mandatory reading for the classes i now have.

They have ovserved many different types of stars in/near the galactic center.

A recent theory says that the "black holes" that are near the GalacticCenter are MASSIVE. They may even go thru phases. Consuming galactic material for a while, then "jetting" large amounts of radiation out of its poles.
