Explanation: These two mighty galaxies are pulling each other apart. Known as "The Mice" because they have such long tails, each spiral galaxy has likely already passed through the other. They will probably collide again and again until they coalesce. The long tails are created by the relative difference between gravitational pulls on the near and far parts of each galaxy. Because the distances are so large, the cosmic interaction takes place in slow motion -- over hundreds of millions of years. NGC 4676 lies about 300 million light-years away toward the constellation of Coma Berenices and are likely members of the Coma Cluster of Galaxies. The above picture was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys which is more sensitive and images a larger field than previous Hubble cameras. The camera's increased sensitivity has imaged, serendipitously, galaxies far in the distance scattered about the frame.




The Cat's Eye Nebula (NGC 6543) is one of the best known planetary nebulae in the sky. Its haunting symmetries are seen in the very central region of this stunning false-color picture, processed to reveal the enormous but extremely faint halo of gaseous material, over three light-years across, which surrounds the brighter, familiar planetary nebula. Made with data from the Nordic Optical Telescope in the Canary Islands, the composite picture shows emission from nitrogen atoms as red and oxygen atoms as green and blue shades. Planetary nebulae have long been appreciated as a final phase in the life of a sun-like star. Only much more recently however, have some planetaries been found to have halos like this one, likely formed of material shrugged off during earlier active episodes in the star's evolution. While the planetary nebula phase is thought to last for around 10,000 years, astronomers estimate the age of the outer filamentary portions of this halo to be 50,000 to 90,000 years

light year is a measure of distance

how far does light travel in a year.....i'm way too lazy to do the calculation + I dont remember the speed of light :smile:

So a lightyear would be 9 460 800 000 000km

By comparrison: the closest star to the sun (Proxima Centauri) is about 4.2 lightyears away :wink:

Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is about 100,000 lightyears in diameter.

One of the closer galaxies to the Milky Way, and the closest spiral-galxy, is the Andromeda Galaxy. It is about 2,900,000 lightyears away! That's just one of the closest to our own galaxy.

If I haven't given you a concept of the enormous size of the Universe yet...I could keep going... :wink:

Yeah, I love astronomy. And pictures from deep space
are amazing.  The Hubble Deep-Field images were almost
hard to believe when first released.  No matter how
far we look we just see more galaxies!

The one thing that disappointed me was when I found out
that NASA falsely colors many of the pictures that we
see from Hubble.  Like the Gasseous Pillars in the
Eagle Nebula (M16) seen above.  Those colors aren't
natural.  Sorry if I spoiled it for anyone but I was a
little let down myself when I found out.  But still, the
detail that Hubble has shown us is truly amazing!  I
can't wait for the next evolution in astrophotography!!

i alredy knew some of the colors weren't natural, but you still see what it's like. It's so amazing!

trendal- thanks, i know space is insanely enourmous, but shit, it looks like everything is kinda close but its really like millions and milllions of miles away from anything close to us.

What the heck Here is mine.

I took this with a 35mm camera on a T-Ring adapter connected to my 114mm Celestron scope. The scope is mounted on a German equatorial mount with tracking.

it's crazy to think that beyond the moon in all of that darkness lies all of the stuff in the pictures above and stuff. It's so insane. Thinking about space can keep me occupied for so long!

i also just thought of this.

we think people are old when the are 80 or 90...but galaxies are like millions of years old and stuff, our age is so tiny and short compared to everything else!

Our Earth alone is somewhere around 4 billion years old (thats 4 thousand millions)! The visible universe is somewhere in the neigborhood of 15-20 billion as far as we can tell, although this number may always change as we learn more.

Some form of life has existed on Earth for 3 billion years.
Sharks have been around for hundreds of millions of years.
Humans (in their current form) have been around about 50,000 years.

To give you an idea of what this means...if the universe was one year old then we have existed for about the last one second of it.
