i got 4 jars of puerto rican in perlite and brown rice flour with a fine white netting around the top of the inside of the jar. the mold is not within the substrate but seemingly growing on the top of it between the glass and substrate. Im assuming that this is cobweb mold am i correct?

1st of all i dont know of too many that use perlite in their substrate jars.. most use vermiculite.. if its not cotton white then its no good... if it looks somewhat grey and "cob-webby" then its probably mold......

theres a fairly large chance its just mycelium. if its not on the brown rice, then it is probably mycelium, even

cobweb mold often grows very fast, often filling the entire jar in only a day or so. it IS okay to use perlite as a substiture for vermiculite, but it doesn't absorb/hold as much moisture and it makes it much more difficult to monitor the progress of advancing rhizomorphic mycelium before full engulfment.

This is most likely mycelium. The mycelium from the cake gets through the layer of vermiculite (or in your case, perlite) because it is going to where the fresh air is. This happens in most of my friend's jars as well. As long as it isn't gray, then you're ok. Also, my friend has noticed that jars contaminated with cobweb mold don't smell like fresh mushrooms...

as for me using perlite instead of vermiculite, i've been told by a handfull of persons working in garden centers that vermiculiute contains carcinogens. Where i live its kinda difficult to locate vermiculite. What are your opinions on using perlite?
