Cobweb or not? (pics)
    #480867 - 12/05/01 03:13 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

Hmm. Just harvested my cakes and noticed a few things. The cakes are placed in a rubbermaid terrarium, and at the moment they're sitting on an inch of perlite. The cakes were grown in jars with a Ramsey Vermiculite seal, and when I birthed them not all of the verm came off. So my cakes are sitting in there with a layer a vermiculite on them. Just so you know what that stuff is on top of the cake in the photo...

This is a photo of a cake with what I suspect to be cobweb mould:

And here is a close up of the very same cake:

The stuff I belive to be cobweb mould is at the bottom of the photo in the middle, underneath and slightly to the left of the mushroom... can anyone tell me if it is indeed the dreaded cobweb mould?

Please ignore the disturbing red/brown stuff behind the stubby mushroom there - it's actually a shadow (my terrarium is red, I was using weird lighting when this was taken, and just it's the way the photo turned out)

Thank you!

That's what it looks like. Just spray it with a solution of two tablespoons baking soda in one quart water.

It also looks similiar to first signs of green mold (trichoderma sp?). If it is green mold you will have a fair bit of trouble defeating it and may consider trashing the cake to protect others

Hmm, I see what you mean. Since taking that photo I have sprayed the cake with baking powder (couldn't get hold of baking soda, but it seemed to work just as well). The cobweb seems to have gone down now.

The little shroom you in the picture has since grown into an enourmous monster shroom and been picked & dried. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with it. I sliced it in half to be sure and it looked fine all the way through.

However, since the whole possible cobweb thing & the shroom nothing else has happened to this cake - no pins, no shrooms or anything. Still, to look on the bright side, no green mould yet either...

I'm just waiting now to see what will happen, but as Flaw suggested I will trash it at the first sign of contam.
