Popcorn Question
    #3807624 -

Hey, I am doing up my first batch of straw w/ Popcorn spawn and I have a few questions:

First, the popcorn has been going for about 5 weeks. All of it is covered except for a few loose kernels that are floating around. should I remove those before I use it for spawn? Also, has anyone ever had blueing of the kernels from shaking it? I was worried it was a contam.. but it never expanded after two weeks.

Thanks, and Wish me Luck!

Any uncolonized substrate is a contamination risk when spawning to bulk/casing. If the blue coloring hasn't expanded in that long, it is most likely only bruising. It might be worthwhile to post a picture of it if you have the resources to do so.

Good luck.

Sounds good.. I will remove the pieces that look not fully colonized.. For anyone that has done this, is it normal to see a little bit of yellow (yellow corn) of the kernels coming through still?

Make sure you remove the excess with a sterile knife/scalpel. I would wait for a couple more days to make sure that it's fully colonized.

5 weeks??? that is ridiculously long for popcorn. Quarts should take about 2 weeks top to colonize 100%

Shaking your corn spawn halfway through helps spread the growth of myc around the jar. The fluffiness of the myc will dissapear and yellow corn will be more apparent, it will return vigourously within a few days. I have not observed blue bruising during mild shaking , so id be suspicious of that color in the spawn. If youve got a few jars I'd just chuck that one. Pehaps others could speak up if they have witnessed such "bruising".
