Sterilize, pasteurize or...

I have read many post that have said not to sterilize a 50/50 casing mix and just as many post that have said the opposite. Some have said to pasteurize but I am unsure how that is done.
Has anyone had better luck with one of these over another? Or maybe better luck with something I have not heard of?

Bake it for one hour at 200 degrees. You can also steam it in a double boiler.
