Does pasteurizing dung in a microwave work?

Do you mean sterilisation? Microwave heats to high for pasteurisation.

I mean pasteurisation.. there's a question in the faq which explains how to pasteurise dung etc. in the microwave. It sounds as though it's not really a contested tek, but everybody talks about pillow cases.. has anybody tried it?

Yeah just read it.  Don't agree though.  infact there is a FAQ on sterilisation of PF Jars that recommends the same length of time as the Microwave FAQ for pasteurisation

Micro Past.

Micro steril.

The  talk about pillow cases if for pasteurisation.  I.e put your shit in a pillow case and stick it in a simmer pot with a weight on it for an hour.  The pillow case just keeps your shit together

I did a search on the internet before for microwave pasteurization and it is used. From what I recall, the microwaves are cycled on and off (probably like when you select the 'defrost' setting on your home microwave oven) over a period of time to keep the temperature at the pasteurization level. It does work, but would take a bit of trial and error to get it right for your particular situation (power and type of microwave, quantity and material being pasteurized, etc.). Good luck.

Hmmm...

Interesting. I think I'll go with the pillow case, sounds like it's easier all around.

I've nuked in a microwave & had no probs. I've also baked for an hour with no probs. I dunno about you, but I don't have extra pillowcases lying around, and don't fancy the aroma of a simmering doodie potpourri in my little casa.

How did you manage the microwave? Just 5-8 minutes of straight nuking?

Pasteurizing involves maintaining a constant temp for a perioid of time. Microwaving to acheive this would be very, very, very difficult if not impossible to acheive. It would basically be sterilizing. Sterilizing would still work, but would leave the substance more open to harmful mold and bacteria.

Like I said, it will work to get results, but you are really sterilizing and not pasteurizing.

I disagree, but either way, It works and is much easier than the pillowcase method (for dung at least); I doubt it would work for straw though.

You speak with the connotation of "results" being suitable or mediocre. Have you looked at the links?

Yes I looked at the links. This has nothing to do with that though. I said that micowaving will still produce results, as noted by your grow log, but that you are not really pasteurizing, more towards sterilizing. Pasteurizing has added benefits over sterilizing, but both will work.

Well then maybe we should sterilize our jars and substrate in the microwave then. I mean hey it only takes less than 15 mins to past.. er. sterilize it! I wonder why sterilzation is supposed to be done at about 250 F./ 15lbs pressure.

If the dung in those grow logs was sterilized, it would have contaminated before it completed colonisation. But what do i know, i mean, hey you have a lot more posts than me...
