I read in TMC that you can awaken sleepy spores with active coal. Has anyone tried this? How does it work?

Not only will it do that, but it will give a healthy boost of a much needed element. Carbon is loved by mushrooms, they use carbon and oxygen and carbon and H20 to yeild CO2. Being activated meens that it will release oxygen and carbon while they absorb several heavy minerals and organic matter. (Removes mostly toxic elements and organics.)
Here is some more info, not specifically related to mushrooms, but... http://www.msue.msu.edu/msue/imp/modwq/wq239201.html

This is not correct. Activated carbon is NOT digested by mycelium. Mycelium digests carbohydrates, but not pure carbon. Mycelium will not thrive on pure coal. And activated does not mean that "it will release oxygen and carbon ".

LOL......... Come on LJ. ANNO is correct.
Certainly Mushrooms like carbon, as in carbon / nitrogen ratio 17:1.
But it has to be carbon they can DIGEST, not the kind of carbon (coal - charcoal) you are thinking of. Hell, Diamonds are CARBON....too. Mushies don't like diamonds (women do).

You can use "yeast nutrient" found in beer/wine making supply stores to help "revive" old spores.

I was off by 0.01%!
It releases O2, but only after it has absorbed enough O3.
Why can't mushrooms absorb powdered carbon? They are the first things to pop up out of a kindled forest, besides mosses. (Which also like the fresh activated carbon.) I realize that they won't chew into a solid chunk of carbon, but adding chunks of powdered carbon also adds billions of microscopic bits of carbon.

P.S. I just read up on the O3 (Ozone) thing... I was always told that it releases O2, it was never explained that O3 had to be present...
Although, I am sure O3 is around enough. (Depends how many electronic devices your house has running! )
I also just found out that "Activated Carbon" is as general of a term as "Tap Water"... There is no one true type of, "Activated Carbon". There seems to be hundreds of versions. Similar to saying "Mushroom".

Last post for me on this topic, since I am not as informed as I thought I was about plants and activated carbon...
http://www.crystalquest.com/how%20activated%20carbon%20works.htm
This may also contribute to the fact that it removes many pesticides and anti-growth organics and minerals which may be rendering the growth to a halt. Thus, giving the illusion of it "Waking-up".

>Why can't mushrooms absorb powdered carbon?
Because they are not programed to. Just like humans. We can't digest activated carbon either.
