truss rods

someone was telling me to only let a professional touch the truss rod, because they're super finickey and you can easily fuck your guitar up if you don't know what you're doing. someone else told me they adjust theirs all the time. what's the deal? anyone know what to do with the truss rod, how to adjust it, how to get the best possible action using it?

That person does not know what they are talking about. I adjust my truss rod all of the time. All you need to know is that the truss rod makes the neck straighter or more bowed (the head points more "forward").

Put one finger on your first fret of your low E string (that would be an F note). Put another finger on your last fret(nearest your pickups). Now look down the side of the guitar right smack dab in the middle of the fretboard. How far is the E string off of the frets? It prefer it to be a millimeter or so. If you make it too low(where the string is practically touching the frets) you will get buzz. Truss rod adjustments are one of those things you just have to mess with until you get your preferred setting. I try to make my action as low as possible and my truss rod as "straight" as is possible, without getting buzz. Now you know how truss rods work, what it does to the neck and strings, and what to look for. I can only suggest that you experiment and find your preferred setting.

Don't go nuts when you move your truss rod. Try 1/4 turns at a time. If you turn it REAL far you can fuck up the wood on your neck.
