what do you do when youre playing a gig, and all of a sudden, a string breaks on your guitar? do you play around it, pretend the string is still there, or do you just move straight to improv to cover it up?

everytime I play a gig, I have a backup guitar. it ruins your confidence, tone, and your axe being in tune when a string breaks.
it's impossible to pretend it's still there or play around it, and it will almost definitely affect the song to move straight into improv, especially by confusing your bandmates.
try and save up, get a second guitar. it's a necessity for live gigs because you don't want to screw up half a song, THEN take a few minutes to re-string it on the side of the stage.

hmm I would try and improv it maybe? it's never happened to me so I dunno.
I mean.. any riff you play, you can break down into single notes and play elsewhere on the neck ya know? but then again it's never happened to me so I dunno how well my plan would work out!

I am the only guitarist in my band, so if I break a string, I have to make it through the song. Changing axes in the middle of a tune is damn awkward for me, as I am the singer and guitarist. I have learned to adapt, which is the best thing to do musically, and have come up with licks and riffs that I might not with all six (or 12) strings. Keep your strings fresh, and hopefully it won't happen much.

Get the drummer to go into a solo and change the string then. The crowd will love it.

im in a blues band, and im the only guitarist. i have to try to play rhythm and lead at the same time, so if i break a string (usually the e string), i drop the rhythm part and go to a long improv solo to the end. i cant really avoid breaking the strings, so i want to get into a habit of dancing around the string when it breaks. im a girl, so i cant really bend that hard, so i have to use ultra light gauge strings. even though i tune down to Eb, i still cant use mediums. (i tried to bend with medium strings once, and acctuallt lifted my fingernail up from my finger. now my middle and ring fingernails are half whie and half pink. it hurt like a mother fucker!)

Last time, it was near the end of the song so I just ripped the string out and kept playing. Otherwise, I would definately have to switch guitars, although the rest of song the will suck, regardless.

Hopefully grab another guitar, if not... play around it (if possible).

Switch to heavier strings. Being a girl is no excuse. You can't play the blues on light strings. You need to bend them. If you are having that much trouble bending them you are probably playing the guitar wrong.
Just try and improv through the song and put on a new string in between songs.

rule of thumb, never play less than .11 strings. toooone fer days.
and if you are super super awesome (i can't do it, but i've seen it done). invert chords as nessecary on the fly to avoid said string, whilst jumping to a lower sets of string and playing higher on the neck. all the while flying between 2nd and 3rd inversions to avoid said busted string. this same guy would also play a chord, and do a three finger string bend to another chord without moving up the neck...
anyway...
