Adjusting tension rod in a Martin

It's not one of the old ones that lacks one altogether, I've already checked.  I have confirmed the existence of this particular tension rod, it can be adjusted with an Allen wrench, I believe.  I'm not about to fuck with this thing and break it because I'm a newb and don't know what I'm doing.  I also would rather not destroy my lesser value acoustic because presently its intonation is better than the Martin's.

ps, i acquired this guitar through an estate sale, and it had obviously been stored for quite a while with heavy gauge strings tuned pretty high.  I'm pretty sure it will be OK if the tension rod is adjusted.  I put lighter gauge strings on it which seemed to help, but the intonation is very strange.  When the e strings are properly tuned, the other strings are out to some degree.  Harmonic tuning doesn't work at all with this thing.

Anyone have any experience with this?  I'm guessing I can find a music store with someone knowledgeable enough to approach this.  What should you expect to pay in these sorts of repairs?

You should be really really really careful adjusting the truss rod, you can easily snap your neck if you end up going the wrong way.

If you take it to a shop it and get it set up it would probably be around $30-50 or something, it all depends on the shop and repair.

If you want to take a chance, but you seem like you don't really know whats going on there, you could read up on truss rods. It sounds like you diagnosed the problem well though, but guitars get fucked up for a variety of reasons, and reasons only a trained eye could conspire. Your neck could be bent too far to fix with a truss rod adjustment so take that into consideration.

By taking it into a shop they will either fix everything or do nothing, but more than likely you will end up with a better playing guitar than you had before...just be careful which shop you choose, some shops have people who think they know what they are doing, and others know the mechanics of a guitar to a T. With a Martin you probably don't want to risk it.

Yeah, just take it in to any music shop, if they can't adjust it there, they usually know other music shops that will adjust it.

The adjustment and restringing usually costs about $25-$50 yeah. I got a 12 string from 1976 re-adjusted for $25, and restrung for the price of the strings :smile:
