A few cacti pics (Flowering Pedro updated, tons of pics)
    #3728355 - 02/04/05 02:01 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all,
Thought I'd start a post to put a few pics of my largest San Pedro which is about to flower. I'm expecting them to come out any day now (maybe even tonight). Its a Trichocereus pachanoi var. Juul's giant. I'll update pics as the flowers open up.

Here it is from just over a month ago, when the flower buds were still tiny.

This was them 2 days ago, getting into the exponential growth phase.

And here it is today (4 Feb):

Some other views:

-------------------------------------------
Update:

The first flower has opened up! It is an amazing and magical thing to be around...and the aroma, is potent and very beautiful smelling. Its like a sweet kind of lilly scent, which I just keep wanting to sniff. I can smell it from over a meter away! We can see here how the cactus is indeed a night bloomer. I found it amazing to see how it timed its opening right with dusk time. It was a beautiful evening...see my post below for a few cloud shots. This thing is large...about 25cm long, and 20cm or so wide. Here's some pics of the flower....I hope not too many!!

Yesterday evening, some nice red tints coming out in the bud.

And today, at around 2:00 PM, showing signs of opening

Later, around 7:30 PM, her mystery continues to unfold.

8:15 PM

8:55 PM

10:00 PM, fully opened and fragrant.

Heres it in the daylight, day after.

And last light, when the second one opened.

---------------------------------------------------------------

This young Trichocereus chilensis is doing well, after a season of dormancy due to cold exposure.

A nice healthy growing tip of one of my short spined Trichocereus peruvianus.

Trichocereus macrogonus.

Fat Trichocereus scopolicolus pups.

Trichocereus pachanoi.

This is my first ever monstrose cactus, I think its a Cereus peruvianus. Found it at the grocery store in their little rack of usually generic small cacti.

Here's another little guy I got recently, for a couple of bucks at the department store. I think it may be Trichocereus peruvianus, but it is still young so hard to tell. Can anyone confirm or deny this suspicion?

The graft is also doing well. Took two of the babies off today, grafted one of em, and one is waiting to go into soil on its own.

And finally, one of the whole family (well, most of them anyway).

Wow to the zow!! What an impressive collection! If I may inquire, what fertilizer do you use? And how old must a Trichocereus be to flower? Ever get any seeds? Thanks for the pics, peace!!!

Heh, thanks for all the compliments people, I told the cacti and they were flattered to hear that they were being admired from around the world

Just thought I'd bump this as I updated the pics above, the flower has bloomed on this amazing evening, it was a magical experience, sat with it for hours while it opened up. See below for some off topic sky pics, under which the flower bloomed.

And to Tool Troll, I have been using liquid organic ferts on all of my cacti. I usually alternate between one that is a liquid mix of blood + bone, fish emulsion and seaweed, and one that is some kind of hot-composted liquid manure concentrate. I fert with normal strength solution about once every 10 days or so, with at least one watering in between. In addition to this they are supplimented with their soil nutes, which is made up of roughly 50% compost, 30% potting mix, 10% horse poo and 10% coarse sand.

As for the age of the cactus before it blooms, I'm not sure if it is determined by age or height, or just some kind of overall 'maturity' level, but this cactus is around 6-7 years old, and pretty much all of the ones that I have seen bloom have been around that age or older as well.

Anyway, here's a few pics from tonight.

PS, anyone have any thoughts on the possible T. peruvianus?

zee werp - Thanks for the reply. Those are some happy, well-fed cacti there. And it shows!  I like the 50% compost in the mix, that probably has a bunch of beneficial microorganisms that keep the soil healthy. SO do you repot each year?
And such a beatiful flower! Nice pics, five shrooms for you! Oh, and I was thinking, maybe if the cacti weren't fed so much and treated so well in general, they might bloom earlier in an attempt at species survival? Just a thought. Keep up the great work!
Peace!
