average P. Cubensis size?
    #371492 -

hiya.
i'm just curious to know around about how big should these mushrooms grow before i harvest them (they're native Australian)..i know to wait til the veil is about to break, but will their veil's break if they're small? also would like to know an average weight per shroom. i know that may be hard to give any accurate numbers but i just need something to compare to.
i only started getting pins happening last week and i have about 60-70 shrooms growing off 5 cakes, my largest one being about 10-12 cm long and still growing. That one by itself isnt really enough to trip with noticable visual effects is it?

Only a few will grow full size, the rest wll abhort about the same time the big ones are ready.

That one thats heading for the 5 or 6 inch mark, is prolly enough for a mild trip.

here is the reality to youre answer: there will be tiny mushrooms still wanting to grow when the viels are about to break. you want to wait till the get as big as they can, and this means letting some spores go. my airpump got a little crooked one time so it was pionting toward the side of the terrarium, and there was a large splotch of spores there. and when i dumped out the water in the bottom of the terrarium the water was like purple! and some of the caps of the shrooms were black with spores and if you touched them youre finger would have a mark on it. i waited till they were all a large size, and when i made a harvest there were about 30-40 small pins that ended up abhorting = ( i think i had a shroom prob though, i ended up getting alot more than i expected!! hopefully they will give some more large flushes that will make up for the pins lost. i felt kinda bad. one shroom is rarely enough to trip off of. 10-12 cm seems pretty large though. dont worry about the shroom size, just worry about how many you get.

"you want to wait till the get as big as they can, and this means letting some spores go"

-I disagree. You DO NOT want to wait until they get as big as they can, unless you want to get a print... Once the veil breaks, psilocybin isn't produced anymore, therefore YEs, the mushroom gets bigger, but no more active ingredients are being produced. What does this mean? You should pick the shrooms right before/after the veil tears. This way potency is at its highest. If you wait until the spores drop, then you're wasting the cakes nutrients by letting the muchrooms grow without producing psilocybin and psilocin.

that is just an old wives tale so newbies dont get spores all over there terrarium and freak out. another thing that developed that rumor was the "magic" pf strain. they made that rumor because the pf strain rarely matures enough before the viel breaks (or so im told) i let 3 out of 5 shrooms break their viels and they rocked my world!!! i took about 10 grams of b+ and only 5 grams of my pes hawians got me just as fucked up, and even more visuals!

Aluminum_can, I don't think you get what I'm saying...

I'm not saying that once the veil breaks, potency DECREASES; I'm saying that once the veil breaks, potency doesn't INCREASE, even though the size of the mushroom does... Yes, mushrooms that are fully matured will "rock your world", but if you take a mushroom that just broke it's veil, and then you take another similar mushroom and let it grow to its full size, they will both have the same potency. Why? Because once the veil breaks, the shroom focuses on making spores, not psilocybin/psilocin.

AC is right. It still does produce alkaloids just at a slower rate. Therefore some feel it is not worth wasting the nutrients of the substrate when they could be used to grow new mushrooms.

So aren't I right then?

I thought that it completely stopped producing psilocybin, but I guess you're right; it still produces, but in a much smaller amount. AC said to let them keep growing, but I said not to, since it's a waste of nutrients, exactly what you said.

ya but those alkoliods are made up in the ones you let grow. i only needed to let them sporulate for a day, while the other ones got alot bigger.

Ok, lets break it down realisticly. You have two types of people 1. Looking for the best possible trip for themselves, harvesting mushrooms at the peak of their potency(although perhaps not the peak of their actual size). -This is acheived by picking the mushrooms directly(I mean directly) after their veil has broken. 2. You have the people looking to "sell"(dirty word) the mushrooms. If you were looking to run a profitable yet legitimate business venture off the mushrooms, you would probably wait to pick until the cap has extended as far as it will w/o dropping spores, so that the potency is more in balance with the size of the shroom.
Of course you could always pick "peak potency" shrooms for yourself, and sell the ones that are larger, "older" shrooms.

Either way, unless you were too allow all of your caps to sporulate, and they were to sporulate heavy, the potency should never be an issue when mushrooms are growing off a high nutrient substrate. In other words, shrooms you grow yourself are bound to get ya twisted :P

Thank you for that post Nug -
A friend of mine had grown some Hawains, and went away for the weekend. When he came back, all of the shroomes had opened, and they opened like he had never seen before, like when an umbrella gets turned inside out in a wind storm. - Later, his friends noticed the effects were almost minimal, even though doses(3 - 4gms dry) were being taken. - In contrast to the previous month when a crop of PF's were picked right after openeing, some were still even closed the effects were incredible on almost 1/2 what they took with the Hawaiians. - I guess it really does matter.
