Perlite or Vermiculite?
    #3723034 - 02/03/05 01:18 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

failed to find vermiculite in my local travels os after doing some research on a horticultural site and comparing their general chemical makeup/ physical properties i concluded that the two are interchangable

here is a pic of my substrate

am i correct or totaly wrong

P.S. does this jar look a bit dry to you?

You are (partially) wrong, perlite only has a fraction of the water storing capability of vermiculite.

Just cause they come in the same size bag doesn't mean they're interchangable

Your substrate shouldn't be bone dry. nor should it be soaking wet. Moist, or damp is what you want.
This is the reason perlite is not really used in substrate mixes. It's difficult to get the moisture content just right using it given it's properties.
IMO the next best materail to vermiculite is coir(untested though).
If your in the US of A then vermiculite shouldn't be to hard to find. alot folks who are new to the hobby always seem to have trouble finding this stuff, even harder during winter months.
But it's out their...
Grab the yellow pages and look in the garden centers, farm supply, ect. it's out their

I mixed coir, water, brf, sterilized and inoculated with a spore syringe.

It didn't grow.

When inoculated with mycelium water, it grew.
