When should I expect my first aborted pin?

When will the pins usually begin to abort on a cake? Some of mine are a little over a 1/4 of an inch long now. Should I be looking for color changes in them already?

Also I read something either here or on another site that said if your humidity gets to high it will cause the pins to abort. I have the perlite tek going & all is well so far. Is there any way to tell if it is to high if you do not have a hygrometer?

First of all, are you using PF Classic strain? If so, you can expect aborts at any time.

All strains have aborts to a varying degree, but PF tends to be the breadwinner in this category...Anyways(and this applies to all strains), when the gaps between formerly equal size premordia are becoming obviously bigger, then the smaller of them is most likely an abort.

Trust me, it will become very obvious very quickly...once the big boys hit their stride, the aborts will become evident. Just try to pick them before the cap turns black..

Also, variance in humidity is more the reason for aborts..try to maintain a mean 92-95% level, deviating from that as little as possible...

I am using the PF classic & Hawaiian. Some of the taller pins on my PF cakes are darker than the smaller ones. Do you think this is the first sign of aborts or are these the beginings of normal PF development?

Look, don't sweat it. You'll KNOW when it's an abhort when it doesn't grow like all the other healthy ones. Or, you could just pick what you think will be an abhort now and fuck everything up : ) . You be the judge. peace

i don't reallly know when you should expect your first aborted pin. that does remind me though of the commercial w/ the phone and the pin on it. atnt or sprint or something.. would you believe i got my phone bill yesterday and it was three hundred dollars.. i would suggest that if anyone else goes out and gets a cellphone to look into free nights and weekends. hope i helped .. fred
