light and vermiculite
    #371548 - 08/14/01 02:50 AM (22 years, 7 months ago)

Is it alright if my friend uses vermiculite instead of perlite in her terrarium?

She cannot make her lid of the terrarium clear, therefore no light can get through. But when she fans the terrarium (4 times a day) there will be some light. Will this be enough?

How comes? Can?t she put a sheet of plastic over the terrarium top?

Ive found crunched up packing peanuts (the styrofoam ones) to be an excellent replacement for perlite.

She thinks that it might be possible to tear off the lid, and put clear plastic on top... The plastic container that she's using as a terrarium is weird. It doesn't have a lid; instead, it has two "lids" that open and close (like a cabinet or a door). If she removes these, there is not smooth top, it's a whole bunch of "hinges" on the top. This is why it is preferable to leave the lid on, rather than to remove it and put plastic on... 15 mins. of light is what she can give them, max. (without taking lid off)

Packing Peanuts? Never heard of them... Vermiculite will work, right? Not as good as perlite, but still...

Packing peanuts, available at any office supply store. Why not make a new lid? Look at fanaticus.com
It's basically plastic sheeting, stapled to a wooden frame.

Alright, so I guess this means that verm. is NOT a good substitute, and that she should be using perlite or crushed packing peanuts instead...
