I don't think that gypsum is a ph buffer. If I'm not mistaken, it helps to keep the substrate loose so it doesn't stick to the jar so much. That could be wrong.

I use egg shells. Bake them till they turn brown. Any nutrients will be gone, and the shells crumble easily.

It is AAAA buffer, dont know how strong though and which rate to use it.
DO a search.
Each garden centre has good PH-buffers, on dehydrated lime base. Crushed oistershells (birdsand!), crushed eggscales, crushed bones (get rid of that evidence!) all will work in one way or the other!

many Calcium carbonate brands (or lime) burn shrooms.

I think we all need an expert to recomend a trustable BRAND, and maybe even a link ... something that will work 4 sure

THANX!!

Calcium Carbonate does NOT burn shrooms. See this:

i don't think gypsum works as a Ph buffer. i've read many times that hydrated lime is extremely strong (it will burn your skin with prolonged contact) and will burn myc. real chalk is pure ground calcium carbonate, not the same as blackboard chalk however. i've found ground oyster shell in the bird section of pet shops and in feed stores bagged as chicken feed.
