Calcium carbonate(chalk) vs calcium sulfate (gypsum)
    #7779190 - 12/19/07 07:49 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hi,

Today I bought 2 lbs of calcium carbonate for 15$ but the calcium was only 5$.

Calcium sulfate seems to be less used by people here, is it as good as the Calcium carbonate?

Thx

Read the last few days worth of posts on this forum. Lime and gypsum and their properties and uses have been discussed and described in detail. You shouldn't pay more than $1 per pound for calcium carbonate. You don't need food grade.

Gypsum is the same as chalk, as chalk is calcium sulfate not calcium carbonate.

Gypsum is used for three reasons. In order of importance these are: Nutrient supplement, anti-clumping agent in grains, pH buffer.

Calcium Carbonate is only used as a pH buffer. While it is more effective than gypsum at doing this, since you should have already corrected pH using hydrated lime, it is pretty much unnecessary, unless your casing is going to be really long term.
