Calcium Carbonate [chalk]
    #7452123 - 09/25/07 02:49 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I read on a box of chalk that it contains calcium carbonate, so does anyone know if its safe to grind up some chalk and use it to raise the PH of casings/substrates? I cant find any natural sources of it anywhere else.

Also, what about saving eggshells, cleaning off and grinding up?

I posted a reply to your question in the other thread where you just asked this question. But, no, you can't use black board chalk. I found this in the growing mushrooms section, casing area...

What Different Casing Layer Ingredients Are There

"Limestone flour (Calcium carbonate, CaCO3, chalk (NOT blackboard chalk!) Acts as a buffer agent in the casing formulation, rises the pH. Depending on the initial pH of the casing mix, 10 -20 vol% of limestone flour should be used. Limestone is the buffer agent used by the most cultivators. Also used as feed supplement for cows and horses."

egg shells are a valid source of calcium carbonate. Dry them and powder in a coffee grinder. Think they may be slow release which makes limestone flour better. I've never had probs with the casing layer contaminating ever with no buffer.
