politics in the shroomery (with a poll)

I know I'm not the only republican in the shroomery, but I'm probably in the minority. Anyhow, I respect everyone's political point of view, even though I do not always agree. I was getting ready to post a reply on the thread talking about Michael Moore's 9/11 "documentary" and after writing a long diatribe of my opinion I decided I wouldn't post it. I figured everyone has their opinion, and what I say here is not likely to convince anyone that they are wrong in their beliefs about George Bush, the USA, the war in Iraq, etc. Also, I don't feel like getting into such a heated debate here in the shroomery among people that I like so much. I don't really give a rat's ass what anyone thinks about my opinion, but I'm sure there are those that let that prevent them from posting. Anyhow, I am just wondering how many people here do not get involved in political discussions in the shroomery and what your reasons are for avoiding those discussions. I'll try a short poll with this post.

There is a section on this board specially designed for politics, just so you know

Nah. It's just me. When I start talking politics, I get kinda worked up. I like coming to the Shroomery for laid back conversation and fun. I usually don't get that when talking politics.

He knows, he posted in there once.
The thing for me is, I've been forum-ing and IRCing for many many years, and I've seen and said it all before... The problem is, both religion and politics are generally fruitless to discuss in a technical forum (eh, mostly where I go, but I'll call the shroomery a "drug and ethnobotanical technical forum") because firstly it is off topic (except of course, in designated areas like a subforum meant for it) and secondly (most importantly) in the end, almost no-one is willing to concede or be swayed by anything anyone else says so it ends up that people just start talking AT each other instead of TO each other, as well as often brings emotional responses which lead to flame wars and such... It's just, to me, not productive.
That said, I love discussing religion and politics. It never gets old for me to see what makes people tick, and I've always tried to keep an open mind throughout these things and re-evaluate myself again and again. EVERYONE makes good points and bad points. I think political discussions on forums and such as I grew up directly contributed to me becoming a moderate and not a democrat with my dad's family or republican with my mom's family (heh, having both sides there, too probably contributed as well ^_^ ).

sometimes, I tend to avoid a lot of political discussion lately because I know where I stand on issues and don't think constant discussion, especially with someone who isn't willing to understand where I'm coming from regardless of their political affiliation, really produces anything. I don't come to the Shroomery for political discussion. I have other outlets for that if I want it.

The whole country's got a fucked up mentality. We all got a gang mentality. Republicans are fucking idiots. Democrats are fucking idiots. Conservatives are idiots and liberals are idiots.
Anyone who makes up their mind before they hear the issue is a fucking fool. Everybody, nah, nah, nah, everybody is so busy wanting to be down with a gang! I'm a conservative! I'm a liberal! I'm a conservative! It's bullshit!
Be a fucking person. Listen. Let it swirl around your head. Then form your opinion.
No normal decent person is one thing. OK!?! I got some shit I'm conservative about, I got some shit I'm liberal about. Crime - I'm conservative. Prostitution - I'm liberal.

I picked other. My reasons for not replying: I think the poster is trying to bait me. I don't like leading questions unless they are obvious. I think the poster cannot be convinced, and that arguing my point would fall on deaf ears. If I think the subject is too touchy or if it seems too soon to discuss it. I've been in other forums where discussions about certain things, like religion, were banned simply because they started flame wars. If I think I don't know enough about the subject of the post, in this case I will either do some quick google research or move on to the next thread. Sometimes I just don't have an opinion ready to write down.

Somtimes I don't discuss polotics in the shroomery because people don't know what the hell they're talking about. I'm a liberal but sometimes people get a little to liberal with all their stupid conspiracy theories.

Politics is a touchy subject for a lot of people. I occasionally go into PAL, but I try to avoid some of the more heated debates.

I am here mostly because of the political discourse. I like it, I think it's exciting and I enjoy the battle. The fact that I may have successfully followed some directions and become reacquainted with some joys from an earlier existence notwithstanding.

Do you talk about politics on the shroomery: Yes
Times when you refrain to do so: A lot of the time lately because it always turns into a blame game with this side arguing that that side's politics were bad when they... then that side arguing that this side spent too much money on... and on and on and on and on. It just never seems to stop and is unproductive. Now, if it were a discussion of politics and what we should be doing for the future I'd be all about it as that is productive but arguing about the past is pointless and gets you nowhere.

i talk about politics a lot here... recently i've been too busy to frequent the politics forum (if i only have 5 minutes like i do now, i'll just drop by the pub), but previously i've been a fairly heavy poster there.
if i don't respond about an issue it's because somebody has already said what i felt like saying, or because i'm not sure of my opinion, and want to do more research (both what people say, and looking for articles/books/etc). it's much better to keep silent than to spout off an uninformed opinion, methinks

Hiya Krishna, haven't been seeing many of your posts since the move. Enjoying yourself? Everything going ok? Hope life's not too hectic but, heh, that can be good sometimes too. All the best. Cya round.
