I use the long grain brown rice myself. some recommend that you use a blender or coffee grinder to make it into BRF. I prefer just useing the BR that way there is more room for it to grow. If you use BR insted of BRF make sure you cook it like the box says before adding it to the Verm L3D

BR will work fine as long as it is organic i.e. no pesticides/preservatives. You just need to demolish it in a clean blender or coffee grinder to make your own brf. This substrate is said to be even better than pre-made brf. See mmgg adaptation 22. Good Luck!!!

You mean i should boil the rice and cook it fully? I don't own a coffee grinder so that is out of the question. I got some substrate from the sporechicks a while back and it had full grains of rice in it that wasn't fully cooked and that worked out fine. Are you sure it has to be cooked? What would happend if it wasn't organic? And how would you find out if it wasn't organic if it doesn't say so on the bag? Sorry for all the questions guys.Edited by paranoiac21 on 08/07/01 12:38 PM.

If you cook it it is easier to get the water ratio correct(you jsut need to wet the verm until it is moist then mix together) Also when you preasure cook it the rice will expand so do not fill the jars up all the way. this is also form a message i read either on here or theforestfloor "I used whole brown rice b4.... the trick is just boil the rice for 15 minutes or so in at least 4 volumes of water (ex. 1 cup rice 4 H2O), then drain and "wash" the rice to take off the sticky coat..... it works quite good..much better than BRF, and you don't need vemiculite (better taste)..... " However i did not remove the coating figureing that has a lot of the nurients in it. and i also used Verm but that may help you a bit L3D

You can just boil up the rice like normal cooking, rinse it off and mix with verm, then put in jars and pressure cook. If you want to know if it is organic look at the ingredients list on the back of the package. It should only say "Brown rice" or "Brown Rice Grain" if it has anything else then those are preservatives and they carry anti-fungal properties which is bad when your trying to grow fungus.

2 cups ground brown rice, 2 cups water, bring to a boil and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes. Let cool and stir in 2 cups vermiculite. P.C. at 15 P.S.I. for 45 minutes. Don't forget that dry verm layer.
