Vermiculite as a desiccant
    #3672853 - 01/24/05 03:06 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Can vermiculite be used as an effective desiccant for drying mushrooms or is that jus totally not the way vermiculite works? Thanks for your help

never tried it, but severely doubt it....

i had some trouble finding it, but i found it at lowe's...it was a little hidden...they didn't have bulk bags in the paint section...all they had was "damp rid" in smaller quantities in the chemical cleaners section, with the 409 and oxy clean and stuff...wally world may have some, but i've never looked for it there

In order for it to absorb moisture, it would have to be totally dry. I don't think you can heat them enough to dry them out like they need to be. (It is plastic right??? Not sure???)

Air dry, then damp-rid, then CO2 pump it... (Still the best for long term storage.) Unless you have a liquid nitrogen freeze drying lab at your disposal.

I don't think so.

A desiccant absorbs moisture from the air... Just because vermiculite absorbs water doesn't mean it's an effective desiccant. Use silica gel or something. Just don't let it come in direct contact with your treasure.

verm will not act as a desiccant. look for some Damp Rid at your local hardware store. if damp rid cannot be located then Epsom salt can be used as a desiccant. i don't have a link on hand but a search would yield a few post on it.

Never understood why people go through the trouble of using anything other than a fan to dry. 48-72 hrs and they are cracker dry. I could see using ia small amount for long term storage to keep moisture out but when I tried it for drying it just didnt seem worth the trouble when I could just toss them all on some paper plates and fan dry them.

Its Perlite.  Porous gravel, allows water to evaporate off of it to create humidity for your cakes/casings so that the mushroom cap doesn't crack.
