Looking for the perfect light?
    #3672568 - 01/24/05 03:40 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have cornered the market on these bad boys...

These were battery operated 12 inch florescent lights that have a 12 volt plug in adapter on the side for direct wire hook-up. I have replaced the standard "GE Cool White" light that created a yellowish glow, with a "CH LIGHTING DAYLIGHT SPECTRUM", 6500K light.

The light now shines a bright daylight spectrum, with a greater range being in the blue/violet.

These bulbs consume a whole 8 Watts, and put out as much light as a 40 watt bulb, without the heat. The lights run off an energy-star silent electronic ballast, quick-start. These will operate without issues, if sealed permanently to make them water-proof. No chance of electric shock, since these are 12 volt powered. (As opposed to the normal 120 volt version.) The light shines through a crystal clear cover, not a diffused yellowish cover.

I have 200 lights for sale, and 20 wall-warts that will power four of these lights.
Four lights = (1.4 Amps @ 12 Volts @ 28 Watts) = (0.14 Amps at 120 Volts @ 28 Watts)

This would be great in a "Martha", hang one under every rack, to light the racks below. (Without adding outrageous heat from a giant 100 Watt tube setup above!)

I can get smaller power supplies, but the cost of shipping would not be worth it. (Radio-shack sells smaller wall warts.)

I have put one of these guys on each of my fruiting chambers... They replaced my two 35 Watt bulbs that were bright enough to light my room. (Which I have since moved back to my terrariums, for my plants.)

The lights cost me about $18.00 to make. I am not sure how much it costs to ship 172g (6.0oz.)... I will check into that if any-one wants them. You can get other lights cheaper but: they "humm", are "bulky", have "diffused light covers", have "no light cover", they "generate lots of heat from their magnetic ballast", they "will not operate totally enclosed", and "come with cheap yellowish lights that expire within three months".

As for the size of the fixture, you can stuff it into a paper towel cardboard tube! Yes, it is that tiny! I will post pics soon.

Sounds like a great light. I'd love to see a pic, also what type of batteries do they use? Disposable ones or rechargeable?

They normally use six AA batteries. (You can not charge through this, you would have to remove the batteries, or use a power-supply only, not both. This isn't like a cell phone.)

I have all four lights on one power supply, that is on a timer.

I am getting the pics ready soon. I have to charge my digital camera, it was out a while...

It is similar to this, but smaller, silent, and brighter/whiter.

Stumbled upon this cool link...
http://dansgardenshop.com/inplanligsta.html

Here it is...
This is a picture with one light stuffed inside a paper towel tube! Told you! One light showing the power connection, or batteries go in the end cap. One light showing the mounting holes, if needed. One light showing the clear light cover, not diffused. The ruler shows about 13 inches long. 1-1/4" X 1-1/2" are the other dimentions.

This photo below shows the light glowing through the back side of the light, the bulb is pointing away from the camera, lighting the floor.

This photo below shows the light stuffed half way inside the tube, with the bulb facing the camera while it is on. The wire goes to the adaptor plug.

This last photo stinks... I just took a photo with the light against a brown door with no flash. It does show the intensity of this little 8 watt light. (You don't want to stare at it long!) You can even see the spectrum spread a little near the top of the door, in the gloss! The redish color close to the light is the brown from the door, not the light.

The lights that I replaced are usually used in photo-scanners, and mild germicidals, since this emmits a stronger UVA/UVB then a normal bulb, but not as much as a blacklight. (Any germs in the moisture that is within one inch of this bulb should become sterile, not reproducing. Just don't put this inside your cakes!)

Similar to this bulb... "Power-Glo", same spectrum.

I know what strikes me as odd about this. It is totally unnatural. The whole idea is just totally backwards.

So are historians going to look back at 'The Great Cake Eaters'? Damn. That was a backwards step in the evolutionary process. We left Shroomheads in the dust. Welcome to the new age of Vermheads.

Sorry, it was mentioned before... $18.00

The bulbs were about $6.50 and the fixtures were about $11.50 in bulk. All that is left is the S/H for mailing, whatever it takes to mail 172g (6.0oz)

One will easily provide enough light for a 25 gallon container. 50 gallons if you go ghetto on my ass. (Light about 2 feet from shrooms, up in the air will cover a 55 gallon fish tank with enough light to fruit. You may get tall shrooms that way, but they will not be crooked or dull colored.)

What-ever I don't sell will be turned into a giant light for my 150 gallon terrarium. It will take 20 lights, turning four on, every 15 minutes to simulate daylight in my terrarium. (When I get bored I do crap like this... What else am I going to do with 5 timers? )

That comes to a whopping 12 hours of 160 Watts, that replaces my 4 (80 Watts worth of floressent F20T8) = 320 Watts, and gives me more even/natural light.
