does the spectrum of light you use have a beneficial/adverse effect on fruiting, growth etc..

I was just curious if it really mattered what the wavelength makeup of the light people use for shrooms has any substantial effects?
A friend of mines ferret has access to multiple size and output HPS and MH lights and was just wondering if they are worth using and if so which ones at which times i.e. fruiting, or only with casings or certain substrates etc.
I wasnt sure if I should have posted here or in the AM forums, sorry if it is in the wrong place.

It will not substantially affect on the mushrooms. Myc. prefers light around the blue light spectrum, but it has not been proven that you will get more bountiful flushes if you have 100% blue light. I wouldnt recomment HPS, it will waste energy AND be way too hot.

Mushrooms don't use light to make energy. They only use it to know which way is up. More light is not better for them, they just need enough to see.

if you want blue spectrum light you can get an actinic flourecent bulb at any pet store. the price is reasonably cheap. 20 bucks or so for a 10 gallon tank bulb. these are used to simulate the blue spectrum light needed for coral reef fish tanks. and yes it does help. any thing that resembles the natural environment is always benificial. as far as metal halide bulbs go, you can get the same effect from anything 1000k or higher but they are much more expensive and put off alot of heat meaning you will have to fan the bulb as well as the mushies to stop from burning it all up.

HPS puts out light near the low end of the spectrum, and MH puts out light near the high end which is what you want with mushrooms. I think you can get MH lamps down to 175 watt or so.
A few years ago, I had some MH lamps in my grow area for a different project, and I did notice a substantial increase in mushroom pinset. I think a brighter light penetrates deeper into the casing layer, stimulating more pins.
The question becomes a cost/tradeoff equation. RR

Blue is actually near the lower end of the spectrum.

For mushrooms, IMO, blue LEDs are the way to go, but they're kinda expensive, around a buck or 2 a piece, and you really need about 50 to 75 of them to get any real "light" out of them. I use a clock radio with a bright ass blue LED display during pinning that seems to work well, but not significantly different than natural or ambient room light. Like I might notice a difference, but then again, I might just notice a difference cuz I want to. HPS and MH lights will grow ya some killer bud tho!
Peace

thanks but I am still a bit confused,it seems that blue light is the only one that has any beneficial effect on growth so since my friends pet ferret already has MH lights ranging from150-1200 w then there would be no harm(and possiblysome benefit) in using them as long as I kept the added heat output in check?

Right.
MH and HPS (high wattages) are more similar to the sun than any other lights.
