I'm really impressed with this bus of yours, especially the fact that it doesn't use gasoline. I'd love to have a vehicle like this some day. How'd you get so knowledgable about mechanics? That's something I know very little about but I'd like to learn so I could maybe some day modify a bus like you did.

Thanks! It is a really exciting project. As far as knowing mechanics...I really dont know that much in the whole scheme of things. As far as my knowledge about veggie- i did a lot of research before the conversion, worked with the company that did the conversion for a couple of months, and also you kind of need to know your shit when you have something as alternative as that. Lots of people ask you about it- from friends, to strangers, to newspapers and channels. It's pretty exciting.

And of course you learn a whole lot from actually having the system and having to use/tweak it.

Personally, we purchased a conversion- we didn't know much about mechanics(diesel) before the installation, and also it was a pretty big job putting such large tanks on there. (they are attached under the bus). If you want to do the conversion yourself you totally can though! If you know a healthy amount about diesel it really isnt that difficult! Especially if you are just putting it on a car/truck. (I have a friend- actually one of the protesters I mentioned in an above post) who decided to get a diesel benz and do his own conversion. He's already put a bunch of miles on it!

check out www.greasel.com for some more info- they did our conversion.

The conversion cost $3300. But fuel is free now!

Hmmm, you paid $3,300 for free fuel? Were you being environmentally conscious? Cause that's the only reason I could see making that move.

BTW, on the subject of alternative energy,

i bet most of that was spent on the tank? for a car it would be much cheaper. ive seen kits go for 700. besides you can make up 700 or 3,000 in a couple of months with free fuel. as opposed to hybrid cars where you spend between 7,000 to 15,000 more in some cars and still have pay for gas veggie is a hell of a bargain

Thats very correct. The cost of the conversion kit is about 700 for cars, 900 or so for trucks. Then the shop time if you choose to have it done for you is about 1000. So our extra cost was certainly because of the hue tank capacity! 234 gallons!

hmmm, considering only the financial angle...

figure 8 mpg, $2/gal, $3300 = 13200 miles.
figure 10 mpg, $1.8/gal, $3300 = 18300 miles.

About 3000 miles cross country. A bus lasts a while, so if you do enough travelling it could be worth it.

You could also consider the effort required to get fuel, the permanent change in the value of the bus, the fact that money now is better than money later, and that investment in the bus is at risk or is insured.

You got it. It's paid itself off already...we've been back and forth from texas to the east coast (MD,MA area) a couple of times. It's done its job. Also we have more to do.

The considerations about investing in a bus is real though. We've had to spend a bit of money to get it in the condition that it is...but its been worth it. The experience of traveling, meeting new people, spreading the alternative fuel idea has certainly been worth it!
