the veggie oil tank should have a heater or you can switch back to diesel

Well both are present actually! The tank/veggie is warmed by the collent system which runs underneath the tank as well as along side the veggie lines. Also, there is a switch that you can flip at any time to go back to diesel while driving.

Well, unless the subzero weather makes the engine go cold, you dont have anything to worry about. The heat of the engine keeps the veggie warm when it goes through the injecture. Also the veggie is warmed by the coolant system. (see above post)

They do that with REGULAR desiel trucks, up north. Leave them running for a month at a time, because if they turn off the engine they won't get it started again until they can bring the whole thing inside a heated building to warm up :smirk:

You mean always? No. Whenever you are going to stop (for more than an hour or so) you run about 5-10 minutes on diesel which will flush out the veggie from the lines. Then when you get going again, you run on diesel for another 5-10 minutes then switch to veggie. That way the engine is warmed up enough that the veggie is thin enough to go through the injectors. You then run on veggie for your entire ride, until the end again..and then you "shut-down" on diesel. Make sense?

I suppose if it is THAT cold then you would do the same for veggie. But i've nver heard of that. I know the diesel trucks run all night at truck stops (witch we've spent plenty a night at), it is because it takes more fuel to start up the engine of a big ol diesel truck than to keep it running all night. wierd but true...diesel engines are very efficient!

Badass!

How much did it cost to put a veggie powered motor in it? Why aren't all cars veggie powered?

Get on the bus!

Well, it is not a veggie powered engine actually. The excellent thing is that any diesel engine can run on veggie (that was there original purpose). However, we did have to put another tank on and make a little adjustments so that it can run on both diesel and veggie. It was a bit pricy to get it done, since we opted to have tanks big enough to hold 234 gallons. The conversion cost $3300. But fuel is free now!

Oh and as far as all cars running on veggie...only diesels can do it. Because veggie works in a combustion manner, not an ignition manner (like gasoline). But as far as why not all diesels run on veggie? that's a great question... we've been asked that a lot.

There is Biodiesel, which is more popular, but is not fully veggie, doesn't cut emissions enough and of course can be regulated. It is a blend of veggie, diesel and chemicals (that break up the glucose in veggie). Biodiesel can be put directly into your diesel tank which is admirable. But then again, you fuel isn't by any means fuel or as environmentally friendly.

Hmmm, you paid $3,300 for free fuel? Were you being environmentally conscious? Cause that's the only reason I could see making that move.

BTW, on the subject of alternative energy, check out this thread!

I understand what youre saying...But the 3300 has been paid for already! And we have more traveling to do! And yes it is environmentally friendly- emmissions are cut 40-70%...check out the post i wrote above where I explain the veggie process!

I'm really impressed with this bus of yours, especially the fact that it doesn't use gasoline. I'd love to have a vehicle like this some day. How'd you get so knowledgable about mechanics? That's something I know very little about but I'd like to learn so I could maybe some day modify a bus like you did.

i bet most of that was spent on the tank? for a car it would be much cheaper. ive seen kits go for 700. besides you can make up 700 or 3,000 in a couple of months with free fuel. as opposed to hybrid cars where you spend between 7,000 to 15,000 more in some cars and still have pay for gas veggie is a hell of a bargain

hmmm, considering only the financial angle...

figure 8 mpg, $2/gal, $3300 = 13200 miles.
figure 10 mpg, $1.8/gal, $3300 = 18300 miles.

About 3000 miles cross country. A bus lasts a while, so if you do enough travelling it could be worth it.

You could also consider the effort required to get fuel, the permanent change in the value of the bus, the fact that money now is better than money later, and that investment in the bus is at risk or is insured.
