My bus...
    #3667253 - 01/23/05 12:16 PM (12 years, 3 days ago)

Here are some photos of the bus I've talked about here and there. Right now it is unfortunately parked outside my rented house in Tejas. But soon it will live again. (thanks for the travel suggestions). We may be selling it sometime too..if anyone is interested. We want to get out of America and when we do, we want to sell the bus. But not for about 6 months or so at the least.

Check it out.

This is when we had to have it Towed in Massachusetts. We rebuilt the entire engine!!! $$$!

The finished Inside, though a bit messy... This was in Missouri (the place where it was converted to run on Veggie-oil)

This was actually before we started building..way back last..March or so. We had taken out the seats and laid plywood.

This was on the trip to get it converted. Obviously before we put the rest of the furniture in. Makeshift furniture...coolers, futons, a couch... None of them in the photo is me. Two of our six man crew at that time.

And here is our old fashion type veggie filter system. We use pumps to filter for us now...fuck gravity. haha...

Wow that bus is awesome, I always wanted to do something similar and tour the UK and europe with it. Where have been in it? You should go on one last epic road trip with that thing before you sell it.

We have sort of been throwing around $8500 for it. It has a a brand new engine, new front tires, new brakes, runs on Waste Veggie (so FREE FUEL), is fully converted in the inside:

Huge counter top, Two Queen size beds, tons of storage area, Big ol' sitting area, a "bathroom" (a separated area with a porta-pot which we use mostly for storage), a roof rack... and still a bunch of space underneath the bus to make more storage space if wanted. Oh, and a lock on the back door.

It is Awesome. We really wanted to keep the schoolie look still, and we wanted to use the least amount of money we could so we reused the old bus seats to make the "dinnet" sitting area. *Reminiscing* really awesome.

Well, we took off from Texas last may, went to Missouri, through the appellations, to Maryland (to see some family), up to Massachusetts, Maine, New York...then back to Missouri (we worked with the company that did the conversion for a while as interns), then back to Texas.

We've also taken a couple of more trips up to the East Coast. For example, my former monogamous partner and I chartered a bus full of protesters to New York for the Republican National Convention. There were 15 humans and two dogs on the way up there. It was a crazy adventure! We had a dance party on the bus one time while driving, haha...drums, plastic bottles, a little boom box. It was crazy...I'll post some photos of that some time.

Lets see...we've done a couple more trips up and down that way...stopped through Manchester, TN to visit my brother...Gone through endless boring roads in the upper mid states. Almost flipped the bus once going off into a ditch...that was freaking scary. But everything turned out A OK!! If i was a god believin' lady i would say we were SAVED!

We were even in a few papers in Maryland and Massachusetts.

We plan on taking on the West coast before we take off to Europe.

Well thats reassuring! We arent really planning on selling it until a few months from now. When would you want it by? And where are you located. Not sure if it will work out timewise but...Its worth giving it some effort!

i can wait...i we wouldent ahve the money for a few months at least anyway. Im in SC. But we have been talking about pooling our money for a bus or soemthing. And yours would require no work. The times is perfect since we all just got jobs making $9.60 at 12 hours shifts for the whole purpose of giving us a means to go on the tour for the 40th anniversary.

The bus goes about 50-65 mph on the highway. It has a governer on the engine still from when it belonged to the school (we bought it at a school auction). We decided to leave it on there because it really doesnt need to go much faster and we never have to worry about speeding tickets.

And it has air brakes! We replaced the breaks in...April i believe it was.

To filter used cooking oil, I would assume.

As far as the Fuel thing works, here's the site to the place that did the conversion, they have a lot of info on the whole system and how it works: www.greasel.com

However, I will give you the run down. Ok, Rudolf Diesel, who is the guy who made the diesel engine originally meant for it to run on peanut and other veggie oils. Long story short he was found floating in the English Channel one day. And then petroleum took over.

Veggie oil combust similar to Diesel. There are a couple of methods to use veggie oil. There is Biodiesel, which is more popular and supported by the government (but can still be regulated because it requires a chemical solution that allows for you to just put the veggie /diesel mix straight in your tank. However, the system we have required a simple conversion and we can put Straight Veggie in! We have two huge tanks under the bus that hold up to 234 gallons of veggie! The bus goes about 8-10 miles per gallon so...that can take you a long way!

To collect veggie- which is free. You just have to pull up to a restaurant (the best are Chinese or other ethnic ones) and check their grease. You check for the clarity and if it passes your test then you suck it out of their grease trap. So this is USED veggie- recycling!

It has to be filtered before it can go into the engine. We put together an awesome filtering system that is cheap and super efficient (much more than that photo I showed). After it's in your tank you simply need to run a few minutes on diesel to warm up the engine enough that the veggie is viscous enough to go through the injectors, and then flip a switch and you are running on veggie. (It smells like fried food!)

Then before you shut down just run another 5 minutes on Diesel and you?re all set! This is to get the veggie out of the lines to is wont coagulate in there. Which doesn?t hurt anything, it just makes it difficult to start up...we've done it a few times; it's called "cold starting".

If you're concerned about the environment- it cuts emissions 40-70%, doesn?t emit harmful things like sulfur, and smells a hell of a lot better! Of course anything that is burned will emit carbon, but this system doesn?t bring up carbon that has been in the earth for millions of years and introduces to our atmosphere, it simply takes the carbon that the plants (that veggie oil is made of) and re-introduces it. Which is then taken in by other plants and converted to O2 again...it stays in the present carbon system.

Also, like I said it is using waste veggie, so you are recycling. Normally they take that grease and either dump it, use it for an adhesive for pesticides on plants, or make cosmetics out of it. Oh, and the restraint owners are usually A-OK with letting you take it away because they have to pay to have it removed normally!

So what do you do when you are driving in below zero weather and the oil gels in the lines?

the veggie oil tank should have a heater or you can switch back to diesel
