incubation chamber, heated water?

would it be alright to get those aquarium heater thingies that attach to the side of the aquarium to heat the water, and keep the water at say 85 degrees and then put your jars into the water(making sure they dont flood over the top) and let them colonize like that? this I think would be the most even way to distribute heat through water. let me know if you guys think it would work, or maybe this is a common tek that I was just too lazy to look for.

Yes a heater will work fine. I think it was egghead that posted something about this not too long ago. I'm POSITIVE there's older threads about this all over the place.

a lot of people say that's the best way to incubate your jars as it reduces the chance of them drying out over a long period.

Its a great incubation method. But as an aside I would say you should put the jars in a tuperware container and float that in the water rather then sticking the jars right in the water. That should help prevent any water splashing in the jars due to any accidental movement of the setup.

I remember posting a similar question, and i was told not to float them in water - so i put the aquarium heater in a glass jar, wrapped towel around it and put it and my jars in an eski - works great!!

haha! Sorry thats an aussie term for a large container made of polystyrene that we use to keep things at a stable temp - mainly beer straight out of the fridge - it works great to keep things warm too!!

Alien's Shroom Tek has good instructions for constructing an incubator with an aquarium heater. I recommend coating the underside of the lid on the smaller container with vaseline, you don't want any condensation building up and dripping onto your jars. http://mycotopia.yage.net/alien.html
