50/50 Steralization

Just reading over the 50/50 mix instructions, I noticed it says nothing about being able to microwave the mixure as a form pf steralization, will this work?

Nuke it in a large bowl covered with cling film for 8 minutes, works for me.

I nuked Jiffy Mix in a glass vision cookware bowl with a lid on it, and about 4 minutes in, I smelled soil really bad...6 minutes in..it turned to a smoke smell..when I opened the microwave..the entire middle layer of the Jiffy Mix was glowing like hot coals...my apartment smelled for two day :(

ya, vermiculite doesn't get along with microwaves very well. :)
but less time seems to work ok. I've done it at five minutes with no problems.

oh yea, cover the top of the bowl with cling film before nuking

This keeps "most" (a hell of a lot) of the smell in. Then, leave it to cool outside for two hours.
