Putting a casing on an outside project isn't absolutely necessary, but if growing in an arid climate (as does my friend) it can prevent the substrate from drying so quickly.

I think he means puttin git outside to help rebuild the helpful micro-organisms(sp?) in the casing mixture...i am unsure of the answer but i hope this clarifies things a little bit.

I hope you don't think sterilized 50/50 mix alone is going to grow shrooms outdoors.

hmmmmmmm....i think we have a miscommunication here, the point he is trying to make i believe is after sterilization, and BEFORE putting a casing on to his spawn INDOORS, is it a good idea to put the casing mixture outside to grow some helpful stuff in it...i would think not since there would be a big contam issue....but if it were put in a plastic bag and placed in the sun outside, would some helpful micro-organisms grow back into the casing...i have been told about this also, but i dont think it was meant for csaing, more along the lines of some sort of big bulk substrate in a grow bag.

Greghimself understands me! sorry, I should have been more specific. Yeah, in regards to Hawk's 50/50+ tek...he mentions that his friend puts his steralized casing mixture outside for a time to "regain some of the needed micro organisms" lost during steralization.

Hmmm, sounds fishy to me. Why would you steralize it in the first place then?

well, yeah it sounds a little strange, but it's in the tek, so I thought I'd ask.
quote from the tek (http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7977) ----- Here is another strange kicker... . my friend puts his bag outside... in the shade... with the top folded/rolled down.. with a plate on their to hold the bag shut ... so no bugs can fly in... and just lets it sit outside for a few days or weeks before using it. When you sterilize it.. you're killing any eggs of larva or other unwanted bacteria in the vermiculite.. or mostly peat moss... and then.. well.. this is only his theory.. no scientific data to support this... .but by putting it back outside... it regains some of the needed micro organisms' that the casing soil lost during sterilization. Now perhaps his theory is right.. or perhaps he's just been lucky... but he has seen a lot less Trichoderma hit his casings since he started doing this. ---- end quote.

Yeah i dunno man, are you using a bag to do this with? and i think after sterilization there is no chance of ANYTHING growing back is there? isnt that the point, to kill everything and make a sterile environment? Correct me if i am wrong, but i really dont see much use in this for a casing mixture.

actually, I'll be using a quart jar for a small casing, but you're right...it doesn't make sense that you would wany anything growing in there after sterilization...I dunno...I guess I'll disregard this because it sounds like a hassle anyway unless there really is some benefit.
thanks for your replies everyone!

Never heard of this before, but if Hawk says it works, then I guess it's worth a try. Just make sure that it's bagged.
