Keep in mind, you don't HAVE to steralize, however, when you do, you get better results. I would suggest 50/50+ sterolized in the microwave for the easiest method.

50/50+ is verm/peat with calcium carbonate and crushed oyster shells added to buffer the ph. You can put it in the microwave for five minutes, then stir it up with a sterile utensil and put it back in for another five. You could probably get away with doing it more or less depending on whether youre nervous or lazy.

you usually want some sort of buffer if using peat such as: gypsum or crushed oyster shells...peat moss is very acidic by nature. I think that cocoa coir is supposed to work the best though and with that you need no PH buffer, just verm/coir

so 50/50 verm/coir needs no buffer?

It doesn't really NEED a buffer, but over time it will become acidic and would benefit from one.

Using coir you don't need a PH buffer but since coir contains nutes you would usualy use a different ratio. either 60/40 or even 80/20 of verm/coir.

There is a lot of mixed information in this thread..
If you are looking for a simple casing layer effective without sterilizing, use Jiffy Mix.
50/50 is peat/verm and yes it should be pH buffered
60/40 is verm/coir and does not need to be pH buffered

so 60% verm and then 40% coir? correct?

Yea.. but be careful of overlay, because coir contains nutes, the myc will colonize the casing layer

Casings should NOT be sterilized. A sterilized casing will contaminate much faster than a pasteurized casing layer. Try not to let the internal temperature of the material exceed 150F to 160F, so that the beneficial bacteria that will protect your casing material from green molds will survive. RR
