Casing Trouble (50/50)
    #341477 - 06/15/01 01:15 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

Hey there-

I cased my cakes using the 50/50+ tek about 11 days ago. All of the teks I have read have said that I should be able to see mycelium poking up from beneath by now, but I am seeing nothing.

The casing is about 1/2 inch deep, and is kept at a temp around 80 degs. The Casing has been misted about 3 or 4 times, and the humidity is high (plenty of condenstation on the walls of the tray.

I NEED FRUITS! :) If anyone has any suggestions, they would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jody

Dont we all need fruits? Is the mycelium growing into the casing layer yet?

Back off on the moisture. You've probably created a sub-surface overlay from high moisture in your casing. To correct, you'll need to 'deep scratch'.

Alcohol sterilize a fork or knife, then all over the surface of your casing (3/4" intervals) stick the instrument into the casing down to the substrate layer and give it a little twist. The idea is to both scratch the mycelia to create freash growing surfaces and to provides some aeration to it. Repair the holes in the surface, but don't pack them down firm. Keep it airy.

good luck. I hope you get the fruit you need.

Thanks for the help guys.

It doesn;t APPEAR that the mycelium is overtaking the casing layer at all yet, but its hard to tell.

Looks lke I need to deep scratch it.

Thanks again,
Jody

Did you incubate it to start mycelial growth and allow it to colonize the casings and THEN start fruiting.

Thats the problems I had when starting to case, there was too little literature on the subject.

Once you've crumbled that cakes and placed them into a container forming a layer anywhere from 1/2 inch to 4 inch's (I use 2), you then case them using a casing mix. I only use anywhere from 1/8-1/4 inch, I find a thicker casing layer does not make it stronger or mopre productive, it just slows it up and expends the myceliums energy that could be used for fruiting.

Then, cover the tray with cling wrap to seal it, then aluminium foil to make the inside in complete darkness and incubate at 75-90' for a week or two until the mycelium is popping through the casing all over.

Then, remove the cling wrap and foil, place into terrarium with humidifiers and fan 2-5 times a day, and mist once/twice a day lightly until pins appear. Then stop misting and make sure its at a nice temperature and has plenty of air exchange.
