Uneven muscle gain
    #3588954 - 01/06/05 02:49 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I started working out a little while ago and I'm happy with the results so far, but there is a problem. My left arm isn't as big/ripped/strong as my right arm is. I read that I should work out my left arm first and do forced with it as well. Is there anything else I can do? I just recently noticed this, so I just recently started trying to even things out. I'm not sure if my methods will work, though, so I'm looking for some advice here. Is there anything else I can do?

Could I skip working out my right arm for a while or would that be a bad idea? Is this a normal thing?

free weight dumbells at the start of your upper body workiout on the deficient arm/shoulder then move on to an even routine, remembering to stop/slow down when the weaker arm is tiring too much would be my advicde.

Just keep doing what you're doing. Start with your weak side, and if you can't complete a rep with your weak side, then don't do it with your strong side. Also make sure you have proper form with both sides. You may be using a weight that is too heavy for one side, so you may be compensating by swinging the weight (and thus using momentum and not your muscles) or using bad form. There's no point to ego training - use the proper weight.

Most people don't have perfectly symmetrical bodies anyway, but as you get bigger it will become less noticeable and things will usually balance out.

Yes, it is normal. I would suggest using dumbbells, but always use the same amount of weight and the same amount of reps for each side of your body, it'll caught up with your right arm. Just give it time.

Do deadlifts and military presses with heavy weight and low-reps.

if you are doing dumbell arm curls then you should start off with your weak arm and do a rep then do it with your strong arm and so on until you can't do anymore with your weak arm. once you've done your max reps for your weak arm you finish with another rep with your strong arm. don't succeed your weak arm reps with your strong arm or else you will stay unbalanced. things will naturally catch up.

Yes, those are very important, as are squats, snatches, power cleans (and different variations), etc. - but you should do some isolation work too. That is where dumbbells come into play.

Hmm...thats funny people the guys over at WSB (Westside Barbell) do isolation and have some of the best powerlifters around. Since it is only working those muscles that would be considered isolation. I consider a tricep extension isolation. They also have been known to do dumbbell/barbell curls, now what is that? isolation.

They do isolation work for the lower back, triceps, neck, abs.

You really shouldn't insult someone before they have a chance to explain, you come off as an ass that way.

I have a knack for that. Differing ideologies is all. The guys at Westside Barbell aren't beginners, either.

What does that matter? It's not like they created the idea of isolation work. Isolation is good, if your a beginner or not. If your interested in powerlifting, they have great ideas, I never said you should follow exactly their lifting routines.

>Differing ideologies is all

No, you tried to make me look stupid. You failed.

Geez, lighten up. I can't help you take "reads Flex and Musclemag" as an insult. Apparently I hit a nerve.

Well considering the fact that when someone says "you must be reading flex" (and also the way you said you said it) it means they are talking out of their ass. Those magazines give out horrible advice (all you have to do is read one and you'll know that is the truth - they had an article saying that squats, bench press, and cleans were bad and that you should use machines and not free weights with them), and that's what you meant by the comment.

I don't why you think I'm angry, I am just talking here. You hit no nerve, and I didn't exactly loss my cool over your comment. I'm not angry, and I wasn't trying to insult you.

Edit: Spelling

You misquoted me and implied that you can hear tone of voice over the internet in the same sentence.

For someone who doesn't read them, you sure do know what's going on in them...

For future reference, the word ass is generally considered an insult.

Good night.

>You misquoted me and implied that you can hear tone of voice over the internet in the same sentence.

Yes, you can to some extent tell the tone to a sentence. If someone says "wow, your real smart" after some guy says fish live under water, you can tell the tone in the sentence. I didn't misquote you.

>For someone who doesn't read them, you sure do know what's going on in them...

Yes, I have read a few of their articles, that is how I know they are garbage. How else would I know?

>And you know what I read, also.

Don't know what you're saying there

>For future reference, the word ass is generally considered an insult.

1) I said you come off as an ass, not that you are one.
2) Once again, you tried to insult me, and failed.

This pointless back-and-fourth squabbling is over.

From the waist up my right side is slightly bigger than my left but from my waist down my left side is slightly bigger than my right. What does that mean?

if you are using machine to work out they allow you to " cheat ", that being one arm can push the hole load, thus huge arm/little arm. concentrate on even distribution of power, that is key to weight training.

Exactly. I used to work out on machines and my right side got huge, but my left side didn't change much. Then I moved on to using dumbells for most excercises and I evened out.
