Looking for some Travel help...

A buddy of mine and I are looking to travel to Amsterdam this May and I was hoping someone here could help. The reason I am asking here is because in my searching on the net for places to stay I've continually run into the "We take great pride in being a drugs and smoke free establishment" wall.

We don't want to stay in a Hotel. We'd rather stay in a small place in a real Amsterdam community. I'm more interested in meeting the people then being a tourist, and staying in Hotels doesn't give you that opportunity. I'd really like to stay in a place where we eat with the people who own the place if you know what I mean.

If anyone has any ideas or knows of a Forum/BB/Usenet Group where I could get more information I would greatly appreciate it.

Amsterdam is full of hostels. You can find good ones near the main railway station as well as in the red lights district. Some coffee shops offer accommondation too.

There's a tourist info some 200 metres from the railway station that has a list of the hostels.

This info is two years old.

look into some hostels. Ive stayed at the Flying pig in amsterdam and they were smoke friendly and offered ample opportunity to meet lots of interesting people. Its a decent place if your not looking for anything fancy, just bunks in pretty big rooms. I think they have private rooms as well. Plus its right off of Vondel Park which is pretty cool in itself.

my cousin is leaving begin of may to do a trip through europe. but she is doing the hotel thin in amsterdam...so probably wont be much help.
