Hi all, I am a first time grower. Using the Mushroom Magic Grow kit. I am curious...what do shrooms smell like when the
mycelium is colonizing wheatstraw? I detect a slightly sour earthy smell. Is this normal? Is there such a thing as Normal?
BTW I am attempting to grow Gulf Coast P-cub

If you would say only earthy, I?d say it?s okay, but sour earthy, well I don?t know. Could be bacterial contamination. Wait and see.

Yes, the smell is almost earthy-sweet. Definately not sour. It is almost intoxicating, and i'm not saying that because i like them. The only thing i can compare it to is the smell of a forest after a rain storm.

Yeah, it's a real organic smell. It will kind of smell like the mushrooms you get at the store--though not exactly--and it will have a very pleasing odor. A sour odor could be an indication of contaminants to your substrate. Keep a close eye for any odd discoloration, and keep checking if that odor gets more sour.

yup! sweet unique odour... in my experience a DEFINITE sour odour nearly always indicates bacterial contamination...
