bad smell from jars?

ok some jars just got thrown out and i noticed they smelled kinda fermented. they were discarded because they werent showing ANY signs of growth. but the other jar smells a little like the others, but there is clean growth in it. suggestions? ais this smell normal?

That is what happend with my PF jars, it shows clean mycelium growth, but i had a rancid sour smell.. i threw out some, and from opening the lids to see if the remaining had smelt probably exposed it to more contam, but i'm still alowing a couple of the jars from the batch grow. what i am doing is keeping close watch of the change of color in the mycelium, although im pretty sure their contamed. my suggestion is experiment.. see what happends. im the process of making more jars and being much more careful with the sterliziation process this time..

I've smelled what is being described before. It's caused by fermentation from yeast. Clean cakes should have a very strong mushroom odor similar to a supermarket mushroom.

Yeast can be everywhere.  It's naturally occuring.  Even your old lady can get it between the legs.  She didn't get it by sitting on bread at a bakery.. :wink:

that smell is always associated with contamination. My jars that work smell like mushies
