Melatonin

Well after years of un-restful and incomplete sleep, I think I've finally found my cure! I picked up a bottle of Melatonin yesterday, as I have read (here and elsewhere) that it can REALLY improve the quality of sleep for some people.
I've tried many things over the past few years in the hopes of getting a good night's rest. Opiates, sleeping pills, copious amounts of marijuana...nothing seemed to work. The only way I COULD get a good night's sleep was if I really sleep-deprived myself for a couple nights...then I could crash and get a wonderful 8 hours of sleep on the third night. Good for interviews and such, but obviously I can't be doing that 24/7
So last night, about an hour before bed, I took one 3mg tablet of Melatonin.
I woke up this morning and hit my snooze button (as per usual - generally I hit snooze 3 or 4 times before waking up) and went to lay back down...but realized I wasn't tired at all. Nothing. No grogginess. No uncontrollable urge to hide under my pillow. I was, and still am, utterly shocked. I managed to get a full 9 hours of sleep WITHOUT waking up half way through, too!
I hope this isn't just placebo effect

prolonged use of melatonin will deplete the serotonin in your brain try rotating that with Valerian root, Chamomile(sp?) and catnip(yes catnip,, pill form not kitty play stuff)

Can I see some links for that?
As I understand it, melatonin is produced naturally in the brain by converting serotonin to melatonin. If you suppliment your natural level of melatonin, I can't see how it would cause MORE serotonin to be converted. In fact I would expect the opposite to occur: you could end up with MORE serotonin than before you started supplimenting your melatonin.

Please do so! I wouldn't want to end up in a place where I'll need those silly SSRIs again...

Without any personal knowledge about the real fact here, my guess would be that excess melatonin would prevent the release of serotonin. The system sees all that melatonin floating around and suppresses serotonin release. That's just an educated guess- i do have a degree in psychology and minor in biochemistry, so that's why I say "educated guess", though I could be totally off on this.

i sometimes have sleep problems, if its not that i cant get to sleep for hours after i hit the bed, then its the slightest sounds that wake me up. i think even the stress of knowing that i dont sleep well doesnt help in my aid to try and get a better nights sleep either
i have found that being physically exhausted helps and perhaps a set routine, i know this sounds silly but its a little like when you were a child and say your parents wanted you to sleep earlier, they would just put you to bed earlier, yah ok so for the first few nights you wouldnt actually go to sleep any sooner but after a while your body clock gets used to getting tired earlier.
if that doesnt help then perhaps you are under some stress that needs sorting out, which not being able to sleep doesnt help with either.
or you prolly fucked your body up with too many drugs.

Melatonin is synthesized by the pineal gland (a pea size structure in the center of the brain) from serotonin.

i've made a thread or two about the wonders of melatonin/valerian..
my advice is to get some valerian, and combo the two up, so your taking say, 3-400mg valerian, with usual amounts of melatonin (3-12g)...
valerian alone will keep me up, but not moving in bed, melatonin makes your brain less active as soon as the sun goes down, that's when your brain is producing it.....
valerian is good for when your sore or something, and you need to just LAY STILL in bed all night... lots of cool dreams.

thats not all your pineal gland is good for
if melatonin works well as a sleep aid, i'm sure pure DMT would be even better!
