Calcium hydroxide or Baking soda?

I've heard you can use baking soda instead of calcium hydroxide when making cohoba snuff. What would be the major differences between the two? Would baking soda cause the mixture to be less strong or is there really no difference? I was planning on trying it (I've read many reports on the experiences so I am planning on some pain) and I want to make sure I do it right.

BTW, how do most tribes use Guarana? Would it be possible to make it into a snuff?

About the Guarana, I use just a little bit on the end of a spoon and wash it down with water for a nice stimulation.

calcium hydroxide would be pretty strong base. I think maybe you mean Calcium Oxide. Baking soda would be probably negligibly ineffective.

Baking soda you can get from the store. When i say negligibly ineffective i meant it's probably as good as CaO, no noticable difference.
