Allowed Upload Image Size

Is there a particular reason why allowed upload image size for regular users is only <200 kilobytes? Is there a big difference for the server if within 24 hours one uploads ten 100 KB pictures or two 500KB higher resolution photos?

If you want to upload the image to be displayed in the Internet and the image is bigger than 200KB you must be doing something wrong. Providing you have resized it to max. 1024 x 768 pixels and you save it in a proper format and a proper compression.
Check out this tutorial to see how to make the image size suitable for Internet publishing: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23402

Yes, but there are also animated gifs, big pictures (maps etc.)... I just don't understand why is this allowed file size limit as small as it is?

This has nothing to do with the allowed amount of data uploaded within 24 hours, Gumby.

Sure it does, it's a way of limiting how much people can upload in one day. Less uploads per day = less uploads per month = less uploads for the year = more harddrive space annualy.
Besides, if you have something meaningful to upload(ie, not hello.jpg or tub girl) and you've ran out of space you can always email a mod or admin and have them upload the pic.
My email is gumbydude@gmail.com If you run out of space, just shoot the pics over there and send me a PM to let me know that you sent tem and i'll get them uploaded and/or resized ASAP.
The main reason for the upload restriction is because the guys in OTD are big fans of uploading tons of vulgar pictures or otherwise meaningless materia. Just helps cut down on upgrade money/ bandwidth usage (which has to be paid for).
Just another method of keeping the site's bills low and the page loading faster.

While I understand the huge loads the shroomery server must be under, I have often found that I can't upload images (specifically GIF files) without reducing their size so dramaticly as to lose huge amounts of quality. I think what ivi was getting at was would it really put more burden on the server to keep the total image upload allocation (1000kb) the same, but allow people to upload 500 kb images? You could even create a system by which every kilobyte over a certain limit (like 250kb) counted as double; so that I would be able to upload a 500kb picture, but it would use up 750kb of my upload limit, if you see what I mean.
I really do think it would be excellent to be able to upload bigger images.
