I agree with that. I started out with a mycobag and a syringe. For someone that doesn't know much or anything about mycology it makes more sense to them to spend $30-40 and try it out rather than to spend $100-200 on supplies/eqipment. Whatever it takes to get people into this great hobby.

Yea...I totally bought a mycobag kit to start off my growing. I just don't have that much money to spend on yet another hobby (this being the cheapest of my hobbies for now).

Dudes! Mycobags are ok but a lot of ppl including myself had a lil' trouble getting those things started.  You really gotta' crush up the cake b4 u inject the solution, and the solution should drip down the side of a bag. And i would suggest using at least 3cc a bag, big or small.

I suggest to set up a simple terrarium if you don't have one.  Just buy a timer(best if in 15-minute divisions rather than just one on and one off time.  Thuis way, depending on your heating pad, you might want your pad on every hour and then take a 15 min. break every 45 minutes or maybe on for 15 and off for 15 then on for 15 and so on and so on, around the clock.  This gives gthe pad a chance to cool down, don't worry much about fires just get a good quality pad so you might only have it running at minumum capacity/the lowest setting.  Also don't get a pad that shuts off by itself after a while.), a small closet flouro light, a large rubbermaid container (maybe 16"X30"+), a long heating pad(Sunbeam is nice, check out rightaid. maybe $30), & thermometer.  Maybe some mesh screan on the bottom, read a tek.  Get some CAKES FROM www.MYCROTOPIA.COM 'cause these are awesome and cheap.  They usually have specials on the 12oz plastic jars so u can get 24 for $55 including shipping. These jars are sweet. you can prolly set up a terrarium for about $60+ depending on what u nead. plus the cakes and syringe you could prolly get a nice 12 cake set up for about $150 or less. Might get like 4oz+ of dried weight or so. Also avoid any fabric or any organic matter whatsoever from going in the terrarium.  If u choose to put the heating pad on the inside instead of outside, take off the cover.
I think a terrarium is the way to go and cakes are nice.  Jars have 4 injection sites and could colonize pretty fast.  a small mycobag is only about 4 more oz.(16oz=1lb) and cost like $15 each or something. Plus u can get 12 cakes w/ one syringe!

I don't mean to knock mycobags, once I get liquid culture down Imma' get some of those large straw bags.  They do work and are cool, but you're eventually gunna' want to take those cakes outa' the bags and then you'll nead a terrarium and if you're gunna' set up a terrarium you mind as well get some pre-made jars.

If you're experienced and wanna' use 'em to make your own substrate and know how to do liquid culture then go for it, but u can't do grain or birdseed in a big bag and completely steralize it. 

Also I tried growing cubes on the straw bag w/ a spore syringe and it didn't work. Liquid culture works on straw and...anything but I haven't tried yet.  Corn works but u would nead to crush it up and put it in a container w/ some verm on top when it's colonized, it's not meant to fruit as is. If you really want 'em use the small grain based ones. Maybe wait for a buy 2 get 1 free sale.
