Regular tea, camelia sinensis if i'm not mistaken.

I could swear it isn't a tree but a herb. I have seen some plantations in Azores Islands and they were small herbs. But it could have also been some type of herbal tea and i confused it for real Tea.

As for growing indoors i don't know. If the stuff i seen was real tea i doubt it can because it was being grown in full sun. I suppose you could grow indoors if you use dedicated lighting, though.

I've got a plant growing outside here in England, so it doesn't need too much light or warmth. Although it doesn't look very healthy in winter. I even got flowers this year!
Mine is about three feet tall, although I have seen them kept much shorter. I bet they could grow quite tall if you let them. I've got a photo that I took this summer somewhere on my computer, I'll upload it so you can see.....

Here it is:

I normally only make tea with it when it needs pruning, ie, only once or twice a year! This year I harvested lots of lovelly fresh young leaves and was going to make a step-by-step illustrated topic on the way I do it, but all the leaves went mouldy during fermentation because they didn't have enough ventillation! I was away at the time and my parents moved the leaves to a less-than-ideal place, and when I returned they were all nasty and rotten :frown:.
The only way I've found to make a nice tasty brew is to freeze the leaves after you pick them, then thaw them, roll them, ferment them and finally dry them. Freezing is the key, it breaks up all the cells and releases all the enzymes etc which go to work during fermentation. This is usually accomplished by rolling the leaves and generally messing around with them (squishing, breaking etc), but I found that only resulted in a weak tea. It was nice, but I prefer it a bit stronger.

Yeah, grow one if you get the chance. They seem very easy!

You just reminded me that I once had a licorice plant, but I have absolutely no idea what happened to it! It was in a little pot, but I haven't seen it for ages. Must have died one winter :frown:.

Try these guys for seeds: http://www.b-and-t-world-seeds.com/ I get loads of my ethno seeds there, and loads of others too.

I suppose it could be made like Luzianne tea. It is the same plant that makes all non-"herbal" teas; Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Gunpowder, Lung Ching, Bancha, Sencha, Black Dragon, Pouchong, Pekoe, Lapsang Souchong, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. Purists often call herbal teas "tisanes" or "infusions" to avoid any confusion!
