Last year I found some Gymnopilus spectabilis at this same location.

Here are some pics from last Sunday:
Has anyone had any luck with the big laughing gyms in California? I tried about 5 grams dried in a tea last year with no results.

First of all let me say that it is very difficult to nail the Gymnopilus genus down to species without a microscope. Second, I think I read an article about the west coast variety not being active. Someone please back me up or disprove this.
Nice pictures, though

I've read the same thing about west coast Gymn being inactive(in Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World). There is always the possiblity that the mushrooms they ran the test on were actually Gymnopilus validipes- an inactive Gym that is very similar to G. spectabilis macroscopicly.

Yes- I certainly wouldn't rule out active gyms in California. Telltale signs include bruising for sure- this seems to be universally sound as anyone who I have seen have bruising gyms has luck with their being active. Many good wishes.

I found some spectabilis in San Francisco, took them to the Fungus Fair in Oakland and had them identified by a mycologist. I recently threw away about 3 pounds of the non-bruising mushroom. My friends and I tested them... nothing. We ate insane amounts, too. I support the Western Variety not being active, in fact I read the western variety is an entirely different strain altogether. We also located gyms that bruised but they were much different than the spectabilis patch. I believe they were luteofolius.

One thing to keep in mind with the gyms, they take a long time to show any signs of brusing... like 2-12 hours.

Yeah, when I found gyms it took a good 12-18 hours to get this brusing:
...And thats still very subtle brusing.

I have found Gyms which don't start to show blue until they dry out for a day or two. Even if you find the active ones it takes a lot of them to make a dose. I have posted a recipe for a concentrated tea in advanced cult.
Yours could quite possibly be the inactive G. validipes.

The gyms I collected do not shown any bruising after being in the fridge for a day and then in the dryer for a day. Guess I'm not too optimistic...
and a bit off topic: I heard on the KVMR radio station that there is a mushroom foray up at Columbia Schoolhouse this weekend. I went to one a few years ago. I can't find any additional information on the internet and I missed the phone number on the radio. Any of you central cal people have any info?

Thanks for the info. I feel like driving down there and find one for myself...What are your favorite recipes frot hese babies? My husband cooks them on BBQ grill and pours soy sauce over them. If you are looking for high quality tea to dry them, check out this website. http://www.teanobi.com you can try the same method with Matsutake. umm, theya re soooo good.
