I just found and picked a bunch ofmushrooms that I believe to be Gymnopilus spectabilis (Big Laughing Gym). I'm not sure though and I need some help identifying them. They resemble the pictures here http://www.erowid.org/plants/show_image.php3?image=mushrooms/gymnopilus_spectabilis7.jpg http://www.erowid.org/plants/show_image.php3?image=mushrooms/gymnopilus_spectabilis2.jpg I live in what's considered northern California, but it's only slightly in the northern area. I found these (a bunch of patches) growing right at the base of oak trees. They resemble the Gymnopilus spectabilis that erowid has showed me, but it is really hard to find information about this species for some reason. One thing that bugs me about them is their size. They are very large with very thick stalks. If you have any information on these mushrooms or if you can help me out in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if these were poisonous, how much would I have to eat before I were to get sick? Thanks, Adam

Use the search and type the words gymnopilus or gyms, you'll find some threads and pics about them. Anyway, here's a link to one of my threads when i first found gyms, some pics also. Peace, MAIA

From what you have described they are Big laughing Gyms, without a picture I can't tell you 100 percent though. Take a sporeprint should be orange/brown buff., They flesh should be yellow and smell like anise/wood...(kinda like sambuca but not as sweet and more earthy) Tear open the cap and the flesh should be kind of thick and a nice yellow color...um nuff said, but there are lotsa pics out there...not all will look exactly like your mushrooms, as there are many variations.cheers Oh yeah and try cooking a piece, in the microwave or stove...don't char it...but it should turn a greenish color...not like kermit the frog...but still a little green.

Stay away frojm shrooms with orange gills and/or white gills and you will never poison yourself. The Gymnopilus mushrooms are the most bitter tasting of the shrooms. They pucker your mouth like leom does for up to a half an hour. They are noxious to consume and because of their gorange cinnamon colored gills should be avoided. Remember Galerina species and Conocybe have deadly species in their genera and will kill you if you eat them. Amanita mushrooms have white gills, so avoid those kind of shrooms. Mj

Allthough I agree with most of MJshroomers advise, it is really a matter of personal preference when it comes to the taste of Big Gyms...they are bitter, but I do not find them nearly as repulsive as some things I have eaten in my time. Like I have said before one of the best mushroom trips I ever had was from eating about 7 grams of these...so I think it was worth it and will consume them again...but like MJ says, make sure you are 100% on the ID before testing them out. Just my two cents....cheers.

My recomendation for eating Gym. lueteofolius is to eat only the smaller shrooms. Once their caps expand, they leave behind massive deposits of shpores everywhere on the ground. My own theory is that its the spores that tast like shit, not the gyms.
